CamberSpar Parts and Jib Issues

Posted by Carl Hewitt (x365tech@…>)

I purchased a 91 freedom 38 last year and have been doing a refit on it.
The first major project I undertook was to purchase a new main and jib. All is great with the main, the jib however has caused me some issues. The primary one is in order to hoist it or lower it we had to make the forstay very, very loose. Even as such it does not go up or down very well. it is like the camber spar is longer than the sail is wide, so, there is a real angle in the forstay that is need (it has to “make a corner”)
The company that made the sails said this is how it is supposed to be. Has anyone else had this experience?
Part of the problem may be that the fitting at the front of the camberspar is warn and does not turn. These parts need to be replaced. I cannot find who the manufacturer is for these parts, any help with contact information would be much appreciated.

I believe that parts for the Camberspar are available from Bierig Sailmakers, 11092 Freeport Lane, North East, PA 16428, 814-459-8001. Dave Bierig invented the Camberspar.

Hi Carl -

Try calling Bierig Sail makers at 814-459-8001. They make the camber spars and have parts. Doyle sails will also be helpful - 781-639-1490 last I knew.

The small wheel at the forward end of the camber spar does have to turn freely, so do not over-tighten the nut on the retaining bolt.

There will always be a “bend” in the forestay - that is the nature of the beast. No way to “tighten” the head stay to the point where there is no bend, since there are no back stays or shrouds to counteract the force.

Tighten it so it is not “floppy”, but not so tight that you distort the mast when viewed from either side.

I hope that helps.
