Can''t rig my F21 until May - coz we are frozen up here.

Allen, I’m envious.

You must be somewhere warmer than Montreal. Last night it was minus 20
Celsius (minus 4 degrees Fahrenheit) - I have eight feet of snow piled
on my back deck - yesterday I used my snowblower to remove another 4
inches of the white stuff.

People are fishing our Ottawa River from hundreds of icehuts, the
occasional snowmobile zooms up and down, but for some reason the ice
is not strong enough for our traditional ice road to Oka from Como.

Lucky seadogs, aren’t you?

I’d say the mast weighs 60 lbs. I just put mine up using Wilf’s A-
frame hoist system. I had to reinforce the two legs because they
kept bending when I pushed the mast forward to swing it upright. I
was hoping to hoist it by myself but couldn’t manage it alone. I had
to enlist the services of my 30-year-old son-in-law. I’ve been
thinking that a tripod system would work better. I wouldn’t advise
hoisting you mast on water. Once that 60 pounds starts moving you
need steady ground.

Even though a fixed keel F-21 mast is light ( 60 to 80 pounds)
the problem is its length ( 30 + feet). Thus the cantilever
effect
makes it very hard to handle. To compensate you can use an A-
frame
for mast hoisting.

Go to the home page ( http://www.freedom21.info/ ) select Freedom
21
Modifications, then Mast steeping and hoisting procedure by
Wilfred
Bishop for A-frame instructions and photos.

You can easily use the A-frame when your boat is on your trailer
(a
little more difficult in the water with possible motion).

G’day, David

My kevlar/carbon mast weighs about 60 pounds - I can carry it
myself.
The UK style aluminium mast is heavier according to Wilf Bishop.
(I’m looking in my F21 files, but haven’t found the exact
weights
yet)

Christopher,

I’ve got my Freedom on Lake Kerr in North Carolina. It’s a chilly 45
outside. Supposed to be in the 60s this weekend.
