My husband and I just returned from the Sail Expo in Oakland, CA. I
spoke with a manufacturer of carbon fiber masts about the challenges of
adding hardware by drilling into this work of engineering art. He
offered a suggestion based on their experience, so I thought I would
pass it along. They glue hardware to masts using aircraft manufacturing
adhesive. The idea of gluing never occurred to me. The specific product
used is by Locktite, called Hysol 9460. He stated that this is the
product used to hold the big birds (airplanes) together. You will need
to search for a retail distributor via internet as they purchase in 55
gal drums. We were looking for a way to attach another mast track, for
a storm sail (tri sail), and maybe a lazyjack-like system to the mast of
our imaginary Freedom. We are still searching for the right boat.
Happy sailing,
Heather

It seems hysol 9460 is a 1 to 1 epoxy, and is available in smaller
amounts.See www.skystar.com/epoxies

As we search for the right Freedom, we have spoken to as many
knowledgeable people as we can to learn ways to complete a visual survey
of Freedoms we look at. One common comment from knowledgeable riggers
is to look for “add ons” to the mast. The consensus seem to be that
looking for problems on a carbon fiber mast can be challenging. They
don’t show fatigue as does a traditional mast. You know when the mast
breaks, that there was a problem. Drilling into these masts seems to
undermine their stability. I am sure that where, when, with what, how
large and with what it is filled will have varying effects. The
adhesive seemed to be a wonderful solution to the add on challenge.
…and thanks for the website posting for the adhesive.
