Changing Cuttless F33

Speaking of changing cutlass bearings, how it is done on boats like
the F33 that do not use a strut? How many set screws are used and
where are they located. Are the set screws an allen head type? What
size are the heads? Etc, etc, etc.

Mine has 2 Allen setscrews ,one on each side . You should be able to see the
holes. If not, remove the paint on either side and they will become
apparent.Remove them, and the bearing will come out with a slide hammer. This
requires removing the shaft. If the bearing protrudes out from the
deadwood, you can grab it with a pipewrench or visegrips and get it out
without removing the shaft.

On my F33, the cutlass bearing was replaced a few years ago. I was
present when the yard did it. You need to remove the shaft, then
insert a special puller tool. There were two set screws, one port, one
st. brd. They were covered with antifouling and had to be located by
removing the paint. They were Allen heads. With the puller tool they
then pressed out the bearing. The puller tool is a long thread with a
swiveling plate at the end. The plate is pushed past the bearing from
the outside, then pulled snug against the end of the bearing. The
plate has the same width as the diameter of the bearing. On thwe
ouside end, there is a tube around the thread resting against the
hull. with a large washer and nut at the end of the thread, the
bearing is pulled out of the hull and inside the tube. The yard made
this tool themselves, I think.
