hello everybody
I have a Freedom 39 Pilote house, and I have brooke the main mast. Now
I have fing that the cost of a new onde is very expensive.
So a like to change the rig installed in the boat with two mast i
think is “ketch or skone” to a solution with a single mast
type “slope” suported by spys or wired cables. This is the solution we
find normally in the most kind of boats.
I like to ask if some of you have tried a solution as the one i
present abouve, and if so, if is possible to get drafts, and
instructions to do so.
Thanks to everyone
Best regards

Joao,
This is just my opinion, but I would think that converting from a
freestanding cat-ketch rig to a stayed sloop rig would be more
expensive than having a new mast made. For one thing, you should
look at replacing with an aluminum mast - some on this group find it
to be an excellent replacement for the more costly carbon fiber.
Secondly, I’d be surprised if you didn’t have to do a fair amount of
hull reinforcement to put in chainplates - shrouds put enormous
loads on the hull, and I wonder just how a hull not specifically
designed for those kinds of loads would hold up.
Lastly, by replacing two shorter masts with one much larger one,
you’re changing a lot of the characteristics of the vessel - center
of effort, rig-height, righting moment (maybe) - in other words,
you’re introducing a lot of unknowns, and the work should probably
only be undertaken by a reputable marine engineer who can safely
calculate the proper rig design.
Personally, I’d look at an aluminum replacement.
Good luck!
Lance

I am curious as to how the rig brokoe!?!
Anyway, I own a 39 also, masts seem fine, but I was wondering what
would happen if they broke. I do not understand how you could replace
with aluminum??? I am assuming this new aluminum would also be
without stays??? This seems totally impossible, as the loads would be
much too great, and snap the metal.
Also, does Freedom/TPI/whoever still make the masts? If mine every
broke, could they replace??? How much???

I previously
owned two Nonsuch cats. Both had alum
masts. I am aware of two of the 1300
built that suffered dismasting. They are
huge spars at the base and taper to a very small top. I do not know who makes them at this time,
but do know that Nonsuch owners are able to get them and there is a Nonsuch
website with a very active owners group.

It seems you have 2 (3) choices.
Buy a mast from Freedom - they still make them and should have one
that fits (they are easy to cut with a handsaw and if you ise the
right lenght rivets etc. you can do the refit yourself).
Go to a custom builder like http://www.sponbergyachtdesign.com/ and
have him build you one. Eric worked at Freedom in the early years. If
you go to his website you can read about a major Freedom 36 cat ketch
re-fit with wing masts.
The Nonsuch mast might be excellent but you will have to manufacture a
means of attaching the boom that will not jeopardise the integrity of
the tube - if you attach the boom directly without reinforcement you
will surely know where it breaks next time.

Carbon masts are not that difficult to repair. Find a custom builder of small composite aircraft parts or racing boats ( catamarans in particular ) , Epoxy and various fibers can fix most any break. Your repaired mast will weigh a few kilos more but an aluminium mast , unstayed , would weigh amost twice that of a carbon mast. Hunter as well as Nonsuch used thick walled , very heavy , very bendy, tapered spars. Also, check Isomat Spars.

P & K Pole Comany, of New Jersey makes free standing aluminum sticks of all sizes.
this subject has been beaten to death here in the last few years. theree is an archive of pervious messages in the other freedom group. And yes, aluminimu works fine. At about 15% of the cost of the carbon stickDavid Wysen <davidwysen@…> wrote:

FYI. I was speaking to an F36 owner who purchased the boat new. After 3 years a mast broke about 2/3 of the way up on a relatively calm day.
TPI repaired it under warranted and according to the owner determined the problem was a new worker that butted the carbon fiber together instead of overlapping. Amazing it lasted that long.
Probably not your problem.
Any detals on where it broke (how high up, which mast…).

Michel et all.
Two of the three aluminium freestanding masts on the Nonsuches broke at the join about half way up. Attention to the bolts there is a must. The third break was at a point where the mast had a small dent. A fourth mast breaking in the Bahamas to a custom long and narrow ketch occured just above the boom. This " mast " was a lampost extrusion as are most others. Hunter had a freestanding aluminium rig model on a 32’ and a 36’ hull. Isomat may have been the supplier. They get them from a pole extruding company.
The Nonsuch 30 's mast at our club is to heavy for our crane. We re-rig all our boats up to 37 footers every season.
Joao, send me a picture of the break in your mast. I owned a composite products manufacturing company in the past. These masts are most often repaireable for less than an alu replacement. andrelaviolette@…
To change your freestand ketch to a stayed sloop would require extensive rebuilding of the boat’s structure. The stress point are very, very different.
