Friends, I’m able to get a new SITEX NAUTILUS NT GPS CHARTPLOTTER. I guess I have to get charts for it…the guy says around $12 for an area.Is this a good brand? He says worth about $900…I can get for less. How much should I offer? Low to high?Thank you…Lola F30

I don’t know anything about the Sitex except it uses the C-Map cards,
which are a sight more than $12/ area (although generally more
reasonable than Garmin).

Did all of this well-priced equipment fall off a truck?

$12 per area sounds low, very low. The cost of charts can really
jack up the price. So what sounds like a good deal, may not be
depending on the add-on’s that you have to pay retail for to make
the chartplotter useful.

Two hundred feet of rope would be a lot cheaper and you would definitely get back to where you started from! {:>))))) For the amount of possible useage I would shop around and get one off eBay. My Garmin 192C on ebay at one time was less then $450 and it got me from Ft Myers to Rock Hall, Md without a hitch. Fred Molden, sv Volant, F35 can attest to that! We have even used it at night in the ICW and had complete confidence in it accuracy. I am a total believe in shopping around for the right used item and save a lot of money.

I forgot another option is a laptop with Tiki-Navigator and a USB GPS antenna. Tiki cost around $150 and you can use all the NOAA maps and they are free. I all use this on the Ft Myers to Rock Hall trip and used both to check each other out and not a single hitch. Its sounded like you had a laptop so the only additional expense is the software $148 and the Delorme GPS ~$50. If you dont have a laptop then the small Garmin would be wise.

Bob,

Have a look at Seaclear(http://www.sping.com/seaclear/), a free
navigation program that can use all kinds of charts. You can even use
it to overlay incoming AIS ships positions over your electronic maps.
It’s developed by a Swedish guy and it’s very popular in Europe.

I recall having seen a free program on the
web that used NOAA charts.

How do you download the NOAA charts?

Does anyone know the name of the free
program? I saw it in a review done in Cruising World.

Go to the NOAA website and to the electronic chart area and they list several free programs that will read the charts. Fugawi is one that has a free program but it will only load three charts at a time. Most of the free ones have some limitation but its free!
