I own a Freedom 32 (Hoyt) that has circumnavigated (took 2 years - pretty good time) and been across the Atlantic round trip twice. First time was caught in Hurricane hugo, rolled thru 360 degrees (with last reef in so some sail up) and not dismasted. Try that in a wire strung boat! Good boat for two to three and the occasional other.

Mine (F33 Cat Ketch), was sailed by the previous owner from San Francisco CA to Costa Rica (the current location) in a 2 year “sight seen” trip through California, Baja California, Mexico Guatemala and Costa Rica, going through a severe tropical storm at one time (a Hurricane that went through Mexico and came out on the pacific as a tropical storm I believe it was Cesar in 96-97), masts touched the water at least two times during the storm, and still there.

Wow. Were there any modifications made to the boat, such as
strenghtening the companionway or hatchs prior to rolling? If not
how well did they hold up to the treatment. When you say some sail
was still up, I assume that you have a reef beyond the standard two
reefs so the sail was used as a storm sail. How high of winds did
the boat go through? It is comforting to know the boat can take
that much. My boat has been from TX to the Caribbean and back.

WOW!!!
I am looking at buying one and it seems to satisfy my immediate concerns/wants/
needs but was I iffy on whether or not it would my long term goal of a
circumnavigation or atleast an Atlantic crossing (years off mind you). This
story
definately helps to ease those a little…again, wow!

Is there any account of the F-32 circumnavigation on the web? I’d
like to read about it.
To me a circumnavigation relies almost more on personal committment
than what kind of boat. It’s a series of short and long cruises
strung together. Takes a “chop wood, carry water” kind of mentality.
A circumnavigation can take 2-10 years or more. Many folks have
already done it and some are on their second or third goaround.
The boat is not as critical an element as the individual(s)
involved. Obviously the boat must be fairly solid. The basics matter
the most. The old adage of keep the rig in the boat, water out of
the boat, etc. is quite true.
The magic is in the person not the boat. Pearson Tritons, Contessa
26’s, and even a Catalina 27 have gone around the world.
Since we’re yakkiing about passagemaking though I’ll put in my vote
for a cat ketch. Nothing at all wrong with the F-32 but I love the
way the ketch balances out and outperforms most other boats off the
wind. Gentlemen never go to weather anyways, right?

I think I know your boat. If I’m not mistaken the previous owner got
the boat from his Dad who bought a Tanton 43 cat ketch. At the time
the boat went through the storm off the coast of Costa Rica the
owner was onboard with his wife and baby girl. All came through the
experience just fine.
Some years back Michel Capel related some interesting accounts of
some Freedom ketches in the North Atlantic.

No mods - standard design. They fared quite well, as no current damage. Winds very high but no indication of max speeds, boat was in dangerous quadrant of full blown hurricane for 3 days tho, so go figure. At time, three reefs available (which left a lot of sail up) and sail was fully boomed out, with preventer, on beam reach (to try to avoid around the bigger waves). I’ve since installed another, fourth, reef above the old third position, as there is really far too much sail up for storm conditions at the third reef, and as you know, installing a separate storm trysail track on the carbon mast is a no-no.
We used this 4th position during a F11 storm south of Greenland during 1991 crossing, where we just ran before the storm for 2 days as it was headed in our general direction (Ireland) anyway. Tho I was on verge of taking all sail down, we left it up. Maybe should have taken it all down, but what the heck.
No, the boat is very strong - in full blown storm like that it sounds like she is taking cannon shots on the sides regularly as you are slammed by crossing waves, and it sounds like all will come apart, but just go topsides and all the noise goes away (thank God for no stays) and it all hangs together.
Reef early and get the jib down while you can - in the Hugo event, the jib was left up too long, to the point where it was impossible to go forward and lower it. Eventually waves breaking across bow shredded jib and ripped forestay out of masthead mount.
