ck40 upwind sailing

Posted by james hendrickson (jademist12@…>)
Read thru some problems with upwind performance of the '40.
I have an old Hoyt design changed to fully-battened, loose footed sails
but having the time I added staysails/ tall boy jibs to each mast.
Have not actually raced the boat but when pointing into the wind
the performance seems to be enhanced. Would like to hear from
others interested in this rig. I noticed the new 2004 version Freedom
may be producing has one jib ? My 40 is on the Neuse River in N.C.
for anone wanting to see or contribute to design efforts… Jim

James,

I know of a prizewinning F44 ‘Frog Kiss’ with a jib on the main
mast. I’m interested in this type of rig for my F33 catketch. I have
a small blade staysail for the mizzen, but can only use it on long
stretches because you have to remove it before tacking.
