Hiyall doin out there,…
This may sound like stupid question, but what color is the yacht
diesel fuel in the USA?
I’ll explain…
My newly purchased F44 is due to arrive in the Netherlands in early
March. There is half a tank of diesel in it.
In the NL’s, you have taxfree red diesel for ships, tractors,
generators etc. and white diesel with loads of tax on it for cars,
trucks and yachts.
So–if I import half a tank of red diesel, I have to get a declaration
that it is imported. If it’s white, I don’t, because the tax is
supposedly paid already!

Michael, the standard color for marine or industrial diesel is red. Reason
being there is no road tax put on this fuel. Taxed diesel fuel will be green.

Michel,
congratulations on the 44 - you’ll have to send pics when you’ve got
her.

Thanks, and I take it this is the same in the whole of the US?

Michael, yes it is. the Dept. of Transportation mandated that off road or #2
heating oil be red in color and diesel for road use or taxed fuel is green.
Reason for this is when over the road trucks are stopped by the DOT if they have
red fuel and not green they fineed heavily because the fuel was not taxed.

Michael, thanks for the info; it is similar here in Europe, only
your green road-diesel is white in Europe. And yachts are not
allowed to use red diesel in the Netherlands. We are however allowed
to use within one year the remains of red diesel loaded abroad
during a trip. If we go specifically abroad to load up with red
diesel, we could be fined if our story is not believed. So much for
regulatory rifraf.

Michel,
depending on how full the tank is when you get delivery, you better
plan on not raising the sails much or motorsailing a lot. I looked at
the pictures - you’ve got a Perkins in there and I think you’ll find
that it is a very efficient diesel. Bright Star burns less than a
gallon an hour at 5 kts!
Congrats again - looks very nice.

Thanks Lance,
We hope Alabama Queen wil arrive in the NL’s in the first week of
March. I’m now negotiating with painter/sprayer companies to have
her redone, hull and deck. I am thinking of putting in another
fueltank to put the red diesel in; as in the US it’s legal here to
run a heater and generator on red diesel.

Surely, if you fill the balance of the tank with white diesel and
end up with “pink” diesel, while keeping your receipts…and keep
topping it off while keeping your receipts…you’ll be able to
satisfy any “badge heavy” inspector who comes to find out what’s in
your tanks. It will show “good faith” efforts and current
compliance and all that.
You might even “draw out” a jar of what it looks like when it gets
there to show the comparison.
Besides, general thought is that it’s better to keep a diesel tank
topped up to minimize the amount of water that “grows” in it due to
the air space above the fuel in the tank.
