Connecting anchor chain

Posted by tgcmd (Finesse@…>)

Can anybody tell me a safe and secure way to connect two lengths of
anchor chain so that the chain will pass the gypsy of the windlass
smoothly?
Thanks.

The only secure way to do this is a welded shackle of the same size
and the same or higher strength. Easier perhaps is to buy a new piece
of chain long enough.

My windlass has a rope chain gypsy and the splice passes smoothly although I rarely use the extra length that is rope. I suppose I could splice to connect 2 pieces of chain but would always feel it was a weak link in terms of abrasion…

-I carry 100’ of chain plus a 33kg Bruce in my 36. When I unload it,
the bow rises over 2". I thought about a chain pipe to move the
chain further aft, but its not doable. Definately a heavy load in
the bow. We have the chain which came with the boat along with a
windless. Considering my sailing grounds, I don’t know if I would
have opted to install a windless, thus entailing the chain weight.
On the other hand, the Freedom doesn’t have an anchor locker and it
kind of awkward to push 100’ of line down a hawsepipe.

I have a Concept also, and I have 5/16 HT chain spliced to 9/16 nylon. I have respliced twice ,cutting back for wear. I have had no problem ,following the instructions given on the papers that came with the windlass. 120 feet of chain would weigh 120 lbs, more than I want that far forward

perhaps ours is a poor splice - West Marine did the splicing when we bought the the anchor/rode system. We have 30 ft HT at the moment - is yours a Freedom 30? How much chain do you have?

Go over to the new West Marine store on Rosecrans and buy a “connecting link” part #135723 (if you have 5/16" chain). Be sure to peen it down as flush as you can get it.

I have had the same concerns, and I am considering an anchor Kellet as I don’t
want to add the weight. See the responses I got on the csbb. I put in a question
about kellet yesterday and you can see it on the csbb.
