Crack in mast collar coating

Posted by tom11995588 (tvesey@…>)

I just noticed a problem which is a little alarming (maybe!). Maybe others have
seen the
same thing, and can advise.

There is a jagged horizontal hairline crack around six inches long near the
bottom of the
gooseneck collar around my mizzen mast. It’s on top of the collar, kind of along
its
bottom edge, rather than on the carbon fiber mast itself.

I assume the gooseneck collar is a steel strap around the carbon fiber mast, and
that this
is covered in fiberglass (rather than carbon fiber). If so, the crack is on the
fiberglass
covering, and so nothing to do with the intrinsic mast strength.

A tiny amount of brownish water seems to have been leaking from there…whether
that’s
rust stains from the collar within, or some sort of chemical reaction to
something I do not
know. I assume water must be leaking in somewhere in the goosneck attachment.

Nothing seems to be dislodged or out of place. The crack really does look
completely
superficial. But what’s going on underneath? Why the weeping? What shoudl I do?
Just wipe
it up and get on with my life? Or should I get worried?

Any thoughts most welcome

I’ve had such cracks since I bought my boat 1n 99.
There is indeed a hardened area around the mast where
the gooseneck is attached. I don’t believe there is a
SS strap all the way around the mast. I’ve heard it is
a fiberglass bed upon which the gooseneck is mounted.
This is faired and painted. I also note the weeping
you menioned. I believe that is a result of the slow
oxidation of the SS gooseneck under the paint/fairing
compound. I don’t think its structurally relevant and
am pretty sure it has nothing to do with the mast.
Other opinions are welcomed.
