deck painting

After years of washdowns and general wear and tear I am beginning to
see the gray paint on deck starting to wear through. Has anyone had
the paint redone profesionally? If so what is the price range? This is
one job I am very reluctant to try as a DYI effort.

I’m using Durabak 18 to redo my decks. I read an article in Good Old Boat that detailed this material and the approach. I’ve done portions to try it and it seems great. It has rubber based nonskid so although it looks rough I have found it quite comfortable to knell and sit on and excellent traction wet or dry. I can’t comment on longevity but the person wrote the article 3 years after doing the job and said it was still in like new condition. Apparently this stuff is used on commerical fishing boats and ferries as well.

Alan:

Are you applying the Durabeck over the molded in nonskid?

Yes. I sand with 60-80 grit and a palm sander to roughen the surface but don;t bother to sand the original nonskid off. I tried a small area first and the durabak covered beautifully.since it is thick and rubbery.
