Dutch Harbor Marina in Rhode Island

Posted by ereiss (ereiss@…>)

Does anyone have experience at this harbor. We are considering
wintering the boat there and spending the next summer exploring the
Narragansett. Didn’t know how big a change it would be from the
cruising grounds around Buzzards Bay that we so love.

Anything you can share would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Ed,
My wife and I have had a boat in Dutch harbor since
1992.The harbor itself is fairly large and open but well protected
from the predominant southwesterly breeze. Not so good with a northly
breeze but that’s not too often. We find it’s a great place to swim ,
kayak, fish, or just spend the night. As far as sailing goes, it’s
not that much different from the buzzards bay area. Most daysailers
like to sail out the west passage to the outside for a while and then
return with a pleasant breeze at their back. Or if it’s a bit rough
on the outside, you can always sail north inside the bay where the
seas will be a lot easier. If you want to spend the night away, Block
Island is always great ,Newport is right around the corner, and you
could always sail back to cuttyhunk for old times sake.If you prefer
to stay in the bay, there are a number of harbors to the north also.
As far as the boatyard goes, they’re under new ownership
this year. They’re putting a lot of money back into improving the
place and naturally their prices reflect that. At present, they’re
completely redoing their rail system for hauling boats so it will be
at least a few weeks before they start hauling there. I don’t know
how the new management will do it, but in the past ,the boats were
put very close together on shore so working on your own boat could be
a little tough.Also, they asking $51/ft for hauling,storage, power
washing, and launching. To give you a comparison,we’re going to
clark’sboatyard on the other side of the island, and we’ll be paying
$44/ft. I hope this has been helpful.
