Electrical Fun - Bilge

Posted by jsforgey (jsforgey@…>)

My bilge pump (Rule 1000) tripped the circuit on the panel after
having run my batteries down.

I changed it out in a snap and installed the new one it still trips.
Hmmm.

I checked the float switch but dont see a problem…electricity flows
through it easily. What to do?

Suggestions? Is it time to buy a multimeter?

Bilge is pretty dry…but it would be nice to fix this quick.

greetings…
sounds like you have a short in the wires…
track the wires from the bilge to the switch and to the batteries…making sure they aren’t worn and shorting against each other…

OK.

This is another one of those “I should know but I really don’t”
kind of questions. How do you track down a short?

I have some ideas and am able to do some basic work, but it is
time to get scientific from anyone who knows what they are doing as I stumble
in the dark (without my bilge pump).

Good thing she takes on very little water. Nearly none.

Thanks.

Laborious though it may seem, you have to physically trace the wire
from the fuse/circuit breaker to the device, and look for ugly
physical condition(s). That is, a break in the insulation, probably
at a spot where the wire has rubbed on, or bounced against, another
electrical device. OR, just route a new wire, and disconnect, label
and tape up the old wire. Herm

Scott,

I had a comparable problem. My bilge pump tripped the fuse and the
wires got hot. I replaced the wiring for heavier gauge. The oled
wiring was wet and corroded. The problem is over now. I also replaced
the float switch; the old one still worked but I could not establish
if it had more than normal resistance. If I were in your shoes, I
would try the pump and switch and other components with a temporary
new wire and see if things still went wrong. It’s also possible that
the resistance in the pump itself is too high. Is the pump motor still
okay? Worn or loose carbon brushes also cause problems like you describe.

Good luck,
Michel

Thank you for your suggestion.

The pump motor was worn. I replace it. I replaced
the wiring to and fro as well . The float switch seems fine.

It is now working, but I am always unsatisfied when I am not
sure the source of the electrical failure.

She is a dry boat, so the bilge pump doesn’t go off that
often…but still…

Thanks,

Scott
