Electricity

Posted by stratman202 (stratman202@…>)

I’m about to purchase a 1983 Freedom 21 and unfortunately, its a bit
antiquated as far as electrical systems go. It has one switch for the
running lights and a port for the vhf. I’m not very familiar with
electrical systems so if anyone can tell me what I would need for the
upgrade (Circut breakers, isolators, fuse boxes, ect), it would be
very much appriciated.

Thanks, and smooth sailings,
Brennan

P.S.
Input on batteries would be great too.

Hi and congratulations on becoming an F21 owner! I re-did the 12 v on Emmylou using basic tools and parts from West. Start with a plan of what you want and figure out how many breakers you will need. Some boats on the F21 site have been heavily updated with 2 batteries, shore power and every type of gadget. Others are far more simple.
Emmylou has one battery with fused leads to a 6 breaker panel (http://www.seanmulligan.com/Stories/Improvements/target3.html) with 1. steaming light 2. running light 3. cabin light 4. 12 v. outlet (where your running light switch is) 5, Speed/distance instrument 6. Depth instrument. I have a run going from the breaker panel to the shelf on Port above the Nav where a fused VHF and unfused 12v. are located.

Let me know what your plans and questions are.

Yours, Sean

Hi Brennan,
This is a summary guide to give you some basic info. Ther are a lot
of books that give you a step by step process. I suggest you look
for one at West Marine (or other store)

What you need:
12 Volt Distribution Panel (Comes with Label set):
http://www.seanmulligan.com/Stories/Improvements/target3.html

Battery Switch (Optional for one battery but good safety device)

Terminal Board:
http://www.seanmulligan.com/Stories/Improvements/target3.html

Marine wire, Probably 16 AWG

Where to Install Panel:
See Blue Merle Photo in Freedom 21 Info.
Sean also installed his in front of sink

Battery:
I assume you already have one installed. If you need a replacement,
get a good Deep Cycle Marine Battery.

Panel wiring:
Get help from a friend who understand basic DC wiring.

Basically the positive wire of each device goes to the switch on the
panel and the negative wire of each device goes to the terminal
board.

You can join wires from running lights so that a single positive and
negative wire goes to the panel switch and terminal board,
respectively.

The positive battery wire goes to the panel positive buss Via the
Battery Switch if installed and the negative battery wire goes to the
terminal board. NOTE connect battery wires as last step.

Fused Devices If you have an in-line fuse (VHF Radio for example)
you do not have to go thru the panel.

Good Luck,
Nick

I am not fond of the tubular fuses used in cheap boat panels - maybe
you can find something in the automotive world woth the newer flat
fuses.

Unless of couse you believe that is has to cost more.
