I have seen two sail sizes published for the F-25, 260 and 300 sq. ft. I think
this info is in the
F-25 manual pages I posted in the files pages at this group. I have a round mast
and a sail
that measures 260 sq ft. The guy I bought the boat from thought that this sail
accidentally
got swapped, and that the original sail was larger. This sail misses the top of
the mast by
more than a foot if that is any indication. Besides the main, I have a
self-tacking jib with a
camberspar.
Does anyone know what is the proper size of sail for the round mast version? I’m
thinking
about getting new sails (I think the ones on it are original 1984 issue) and
want to get the
right size.
I want to make sure that the boat sails to it’s PHRF rating (another reason for
looking into
new sails). I found a 186 rating for San Francisco, but I’m thinking that is for
the wing mast
boat. I took my boat out for a club race this weekend and it didn’t come any
where near that
rating, so maybe sail size, maybe a rating for a different rig, maybe because of
light 5-10
knot winds?
Any help on sail size and PHRF rating for a round mast?
Thanks, Greg

Greg, The round mast F25 normally has a mast 1 foot taller than the wing spar and the boom is about one foot longer ( factory ) to offset the potential speed difference. Measure your luff from tack to mashead black band using a long tape measure. Also measure your boom from tack at mast to black band on aft end of boom. In my area ,SLVYRA, the wing mast version still has a 6 sec /mile penalty over round mast. PHRF-NE has a 3 sec per mile penalty for wing as it considers wing still faster.198 versus 201 Inboard engine affects ( depending on type of prop ) the rating, usually, 6 secs/mile. It pays to have a folder, particularly in light air. I also have 2 jibs. One is more like a storm jib beeig about 32 sq ft and the other like a 150% genoa. I do not think the 150 helps TIGHT to windward as it luffs to early. I can point much higher with my huge Doyle Stack Pack
main with huge roach a la catamaran. Bat slides and all. Rigid Garhauher vang. Don’t need jib in even moderate air, to WINDWARD. One cannot get enough luff tension with this type of rig. Off the wind however everything helps. I have been considering HUGE assymetric chute set on 6 to 8 foot retracting bow sprit extending from deck level a la J-Boat. Big rating penalty. Gun mount chute works well on short legs. If the winds are stronger you should do well specially if the windward legs are not too long. Foot, do not over point. I have done over 8.2 knots reaching in good wind ! Main alone. J 24’s rate from ? 152 to 182 ? depending on boat and area. That is a HUGE spead. You must make your case with rating officer in writing. Hi Andre-
Thanks for all the great info. It’s strange though. My sail comes up about 1
foot short of
the top of the mast, but my boom is only 13 feet from back of mast to end of
boom. So it
will only take the 12.75 measurement. Maybe it’s a mix of the two (long mast,
short
boom)???

Hello Greg. I own F25 #257 (round mast; inboard diesel). I bought a
new main from Schurr Sails in Pensacola, Florida. The maximum sail
measurements for my boat are: I-28.5; P-29.3; E-12.8; LP (staysail)
12.17. My sail meets these max measurements, and has the max sq ft
measurement of 288 sq ft. I also bought a staysail from Schurr, with
the max LP of 12.17. Don’t get anything smaller. I really enjoy
racing my F25, year round on Mobile Bay, in weekly Thursday evening,
and Sunday afternoon, non-spinnaker, round the buoys, “Fun races”.
