What experiences are there of broken carbon fibre masts. My front mast
was broken about one meter above deck. The treatment I was suggested
was an inside tube at the brakepoint plus an exchange of the carbon
fibre the whole mastlength. Rather costly but what options are there?
Any ideas? Tore

GMT Composites in Rhode Island builds a lot of carbon spars,
masts, rudders, etc. They build a new rudder for my F28. Expensive, but they do
great work.

Tore,
you didn’t say where you’re located, but there are several good carbon
shops in New England. The one I’m most familiar with is Composite
Engineering (http://www.vandusenracingboats.com/). They work in the
same space as NE Rigging, which has experience and familiarity with
Freedom rigs. Van Dusen told me that in most cases, it is cheaper to
repair the mast in the manner that you described than it is to replace
it, and that the repair is generally stronger than the mast itself.
They’re definitely worth a call.
The bigger question, though, is why the mast failed in the first place.
The 28s are getting a bit long in the tooth, but generally unless there
was some abrasion of the carbon fibers, these masts don’t break until
they’re put under a lot of stress. I did hear about a Freedom 28 sloop
whose mast had been damaged by the shock of a grounding, but didn’t
actually lose the mast until the following season in a strong blow.

There are a couple tired F25’s in Minnesota, and probably many more
elsewhere, that mast should be within a foot in height for the
mainmast and oversize for the mizzen. An F21 mast would be enough for
the mizzen.
I saw one of the F25 at Hoopersyachts (.com) last year. It had a lot
of cracking in the hull (wet balsa?) so it will not win any high bids.
I don’t remember the mast specifically, I assume it will have the
“obligatory” cracking and require refinishing, however I don’t think
the masts suffers from “frost bite” the way the hull would, there just
isn’t enough moisture absorbed to crack them. The other boat had a lot
of water in it when I saw it, again the mast should be much more
typical. I don’t knoe if it is still available.
