F-30 Prop Shaft Question

Posted by Jeff Chale (jwchale@…>)
I will be replacing my shaft seal and the cutlass bearing when I haul next month and am curious if anyone can tell me if I am going to have to drop the rudder to pull the shaft? Just tryng to get prepared.

Thanks for your help.

FYI - I just removed the shaft from my F36. On the F36 the prop will not clear the rudder. So I removed the transmission and bell housing thinking I could move it forward enough to get it pass the strut. No such luck. I needed another inch. So I removed the cutlass bearing with the shaft as far forward as it would go then I had enough clearance between the strut and the shaft to angle the shaft enough to just clear the rudder. I will be re-installing shaft, syntron seal, cutlass bearing etc. in the same order as removed . I hope!

Removing shaft.
On both a Freedom
32 (Hoyt) and a Freedom 36, I was able to remove the shaft, On the 32, it
would pass the rudder with a max 2 blade feathering and on the 36 removing the
prop and a little persuasion and the rudder adjusted for minimum clearance.

I own a F36 and replaced the cutlass bearing a while back. I did remove the rudder to do so and it was not a difficult task.
