F-30 Questions

Posted by Dave_Benjamin (dave_benjamin@…>)

There is an F-30 that may be going pretty cheap. It’s a shoal draft
which I’m not fond of. Has anyone sailed and compared a std draft F-
30 and a shoal draft model? Or has anyone buddyboated and been able
to draw any comparison? We don’t sail in thin water and I’ve always
preferred to avoid the compromise of shoal draft models.

I’m also curious about how the galley sink drains. On this
particular boat the galley drain is led all the way to thru-hull
under the port settee. Isn’t there a thruhull closer to the
waterline? Seems weird to put a sink near centerline where it
belongs but not have the sink drain to a thru hull closer to the
centerline.

I’m more of a ketch person but this cat sloop was kind of intriguing
especially for at the price I could probably pick it up.

Dave:

I have an “shoal draft” F30 and I’ve never had the opportunity to sail a deep draft model. However, the shoal draft model is not nearly as shoal as advertised. I measured the draft of 3 shoal draft models on the hard when I was looking and found that the draft was a lot closer to 5’ than it was to 4’6". In any event, I can testify that my F30 is an amazingly stiff boat, whatever the keel depth.

The galley sink on my boat (hull no. 70) drains through a through hull directly under the sink.

Dave:
I have a Mull F28, not a perfect
comparison, but close. The 30 is pretty much the same hull, engine, rig,
systems, etc, just has an after cabin and 2 more feet. The F28 is draft of 4’6”,
it is quite stiff, I have sailed in as much as 30 knots of apparent wind
without a reef, though generally put the 1st reef in in 18-22 knots
apparent to get her back upright. I have heard the 30’s are similarly stiff.
I would think you would be getting a pretty stiff boat.
