F-32 Jib and Yanmar overhaul

Posted by Ed Doran (skyebyrd2003@…>)

I’m very tired of fooling around with the camber-spar jib. Has anyone
replaced this system with a roller furling unit?

My next questions are: Has anyone repowered their F-32 with the more
powerful 3GM30. Were there any particular problems of fitting it in
the compartment? I’d like to get a ballpark price. Also, my engine
compartment gets as hot as a bank robbers pistol. Has anyone ever put
a blower into the compartment to exhaust the air? Finally, my 3GM
works just fine but some seals and gaskets are leaking. If I keep this
engine, it really needs to be overhaled. Anyone out there done this
and if so, what ballpark price can I expect to pay.

Will appreciate any feedback,

I had looked into replacement or rebuild. for the 3GM the US Yanmar distributor
Mack Boring www.mackboring.com was very helpful with information. They have a
service for rebuilding (send it them , they rebuild and send back). Sounds
easy.:)) If I remember correctly rebuild was in the range of 3-4k (this does
not include removing form or reinstalling in the boat. I believe a the new
engine was around 8k.

Ed;

I recently had a 3GMF removed from a vessel and had it overhauled for $ 2,900. In and out of boat was $ 400.00.

The engine came from a stolen boat and had overheated twice. When dis-assembling the engine which was 12 years old and had about 2000 hours it was found to be within tolerance of a new engine. The gaskets and seals and injectors were the only thing necessitating renewal… I don’t know how much room you have in your engine space but it may be able to have a top side overhaul for somewhat less that the total removal and overhaul.

I presently have a F35 and the engine is very easyn to access and work on.

You should somehow get circulating air into your engine space so that engine can run cooler and more efficient. Either by louvers and/or blower.

Why would you wnat to ago from a self tending camberspar jib to a roller furling requiring tending of the sheets?

By the way I am a Marine Surveyor in Louisiana and that is how I come to abe familiar with the Yanmar cost. Also the footprint for the 30HP is very similar.

Larry,

Thank you very much for the fine information. I once visited Mandeville and had an outstanding dinner at one really fine seafood restaurant overlooking the lake.

One other source told me that the cost for a total rebuild would run about $3000 but could, depending on condition, cost as little as $1200 if only seals and gaskets needed replacement. The figures did not include removal or reinstallation. I doubt that it included new mounts either. My engine runs like a top but leaks small amounts of oil drop down into my bilge. Most irritating.

Ed;

Try tightening up the bolts around the leaks. I keep one of those oil pollution absorbent diapers under my engine to catch any drips. Change it as often as necessary.

I’m replacing the 3GM30 in the F-32 I just bought with the YM 30. The
GM 30 has been discontinued. Mack Boring had initially talked me out
of upgrading, but when I actually had mechnics looking at it, the
costs/benefits started to tip towards a new one. Supposedly it’s
almost a drop in replacement. We’ll see. Apparently with small diesels
it doesn’t take much in the way of unexpected parts replacement to
make rebuilding less than optimal. Mack Boring’s book price on
rebuilds is apparently based on ‘standard’ parts replacements. If your
engine needs something else the cost goes up - some of those parts can
be really expensive. Usually there’s no way of telling until they
actually have it apart. In my case there was so much obviously wrong
from the outside, it didn’t seem to be worth the risk of assuming that
everything inside would be okay. I talked to 3 different yards - I got
about the same price for the engine and time estimates from 40 to 80
hours to put it in.
