I was too late. There was an ad for a F-33 with a 206 area code in a
publiation I seldom look at (NW Yachting). Boat had an asking price
of $30,000. Anyone know who got it?

Hi Dave. I have a Freedom 40 .I have owned the boat for 25 years now and have found the wrap around sails very effective. Why convert? I have sailed on a 44 with full battens and although the extra roach provides more sail area for light winds I still think the clean leading edge of the wrap around sail provides superior performance. Have you seen the “soft wing” sails on the new wharran tiki’s. They have a zippered luff pocket and a type of gaff and can be used with wishbone or conventional booms Might be the best of both worlds. At any rate you would not need a mast track. I have made inquiries and think I am going to get a set if I can find a sail maker who can give me a reasonable quote. They are made by Jeckells in the UK. Not cheap www.jeckells.co.uk/design.htm - 24k to see a tiki go to www.wharram.com/tiki_wingsail_article.shtml - 24k Good luck with your boat Tim

That would be me. It had sat in Lake Union for 3-4 yrs not used and reflects the lack of maintenance. Had her in the yard for 2 months working on getting her back in the water. I live in Seattle but keep her in the PT area (Cape George). I am going to change the sails to a conventional boom and track in a Sidney, BC yard. Any ideas and/or thoughts on the process. Does a 1981 F-33 mast have enough thickness to screw in a track or do you have to use rivets and 5200. Also, what about the boom connection. Can one shorten the boom or use the same length as the wishbone. So many questions… I am new to the list so thanks for the opportunity to replyDave_Benjamin <dave_benjamin@…> wrote: I was too late. I have a 1982 F-33 Hull #51. It was converted by the original owner
at Freedom to the fully battened mains and isomat booms. The mast
track is riveted to the mast and bedded to insulate the track from
the carbon mast. Not sure what they used.
To attach the gooseneck they actually cut a rectangular piece out of
the forward mast section so they could get tools in to hold the
nuts/bolts of the gooseneck to tighten it (so Freedom/TPI must have
felt the masts very strong). Over the hole is a metal cover.
My main boom is ~194inches + 3.5 inches for the end fitting and the
goosenectk is about 7 inches. The mizzen boom is ~ 135" and similar
dimensions for the end fitting and gooseneck. They have internally
run single line reefing led to the cockpit.
Check the masts around the collar and base to make sure they were
properly wedged and have not abraded.
Hope this helps.

Was that the same one that was used in a singlehanded
circumnavigation by an Israeli sailor?
I think you’ll want to use rivets and track. Avoid use of 5200 at
all costs. You’ll destroy the mast of you ever have to remove a
section of track. Your best bet is to contact Freedom Yachts
directly. They still have a few “old timers” around from the days
when they built real Freedoms.
Congrats on your purchase. Best of luck with the project.

Converting F-33 to conventional booms. Have you considered the Wylie Cat rig? I would recommend checking that one out as the conversion would be less stress on the mast. http://www.wyliecat.com/ I would be very concerned about cutting a hole in the mast. I have talked with a F-45 owner that lost a mast because the two halyard exits were too close together at the boom attach tangs area.
I was negotiating on a 44 with wishbone rig and was going to convert over the Wylie rig if it deal went thru.

Sorry guys, I was in a relly pissy mood when I responded to those
comments accusing me of being an elitist snob. Anyone who knows me
understands that I think all Freedoms are great boats. Admittedly I
am biased towards the ketches because I like the superior reaching
and running performance combined with all the different sail
combinations.
I’m disppointed that Freedom has become a powerboat builder almost
xclusively but understand their reasoning.

Yup, we all love our boats. Regards TPI, believe I saw
a brief notation in promotional mail by Mark Edwards
one time saying something like “order one and we’ll
build it.” They
would and will still commission them, but the cost
these days.
Zounds. No longer a “spec” item? Lucky all of us, we
already
have ours. Which is why this forum, and its inclusive
civility,
is of value to us each. There was a very informative
thread on
the Cal-list last week about the history of production
sailboat design, the increased costs of petrochemicals
Sorry guys, I was in a relly pissy mood when I
responded to those
comments accusing me of being an elitist snob.
Anyone who knows me
understands that I think all Freedoms are great
boats. Admittedly I
am biased towards the ketches because I like the
superior reaching
and running performance combined with all the
different sail
combinations.
I’m disppointed that Freedom has become a powerboat
builder almost
xclusively but understand their reasoning.
