F-33 Rigid Vang

Posted by tgcmd (Finesse@…>)

Has anybody used a rigid vang on the F-33 (standard booms)? What are
they pros & cons? Any challenges? What sources did you use for the
vang & hardware?

Thanks.

I have wishbone booms myself, but all I hear here about vangs is
Garhauer. They also make a special mastcollar you apparently need.

I have 2,from Garhauer. Couldnt be without them. Lazyjacks now can be led
fwd,so battens dont hang up when making sail. Quality is VVG,and price is
outstanding. Price includes custom mast band for mounting.

Haven’t used one but am about to install one on each mast. After
talking to a number of folks experienced with the Freedom masts of
our vintage and talking directly to Garhauer it seems that Garhaurer
has done many of the clamp around collars for vangs, radar mounts,
etc. for our masts. They’re vangs seem very high quality and for the
clamp and vang they are very reasonably priced. My booms are not
wishbones (isomats) converted by Freedom. Dimensions and parts for
these booms are available at www.rigrite.com although there it seems
to be difficult to find anyone knowledgable to talk to there they do
have the parts (like vang slides etc.).
Having said this I’ve actually decided to go with boomkickers
www.boomkickers.com. They offer a larger size then listed on their
site which I may use for the main. Its design is unique and presents
less shock load and since it bends could be adjusted to allow better
clearance over the dodger and pulpits.
On my mast collars there were custom stainless brackets that bolt
down using 2 of the mast collar bolts. The boom kicker folks are
using those as templates for new brackets to handle the vang and the
boomkicker. This means I don’t have to attach anything to the masts
themselves and any forces are on the deck/collar not the mast itself.
The person I’m dealing with there is named Ted and he’s quite easy
to work with.

Bill:

I paid Garhauer $253 for a rigid vang for a 30, plus $150 for the collar, plus about $10 for shipping. His workmanship is not to be believed.

I have rigid boomvangs/kickers on my F44.
Not to keen on the mastcolor concept.
You have no idea how much force is applied to the mast.
If to loose the collar tends to creep up and eventually starts eating
into the carbon, if to tight god knows what happens to the carbon.
I am considering replacing the Aluminium mast rings with a new SS
contraption and somehow have an attachement for the vang to the SS
ring. Not sure what this does to the deck construction. Must remember
that the loads applied under sail can be very high.
If anybody has done something similar then please share details with us.
Thanks,
Gio

I just posted 2 photos in the photo section of my Garhauer vang and
the stainless collar they fabricated for mounting it to the CF mast
on my F32. I’ve had mine for about 6 months now.

I have nothing but positives to say about Garhauer and the quality
of the stuff they build. Tha added bonus is they happen to have very
reasonable prices. This is a great piece of equipment that makes a
very real difference in the balance of the boat. Adding this to the
boat was an unqualified sucess.

On the left side of the screen you see right now, click on the
word “Photos.” You will have to click on “Next 16” a few times to get
to the end. They are photo numbers 49 and 50.
