I filled the water tank on my, new to me, 1986 F-36 yesterday and found that the tank’s vent runs under the cabin sole ending over the bilge pump. When the tank was filling I was in the cabin and shut off the hose when water started to come out the vent. After shutoff, water continued to come out the vent until 10-15 gallons were in the bilge.
Is this the normal placement of the vent?
Is the 10-15 gallons normal?
One possible explanation is that the boat is trimmed a few degrees aft as she sits on her jackstands.
Thanks
Bill

The water tank in my F-30 overflows into the bilge the
same way you describe here. I’m used to it now and as
I’m filling the tank, if I’m on the dock when I see
the bilge pump has kicked on, I know to turn off the
hose.
It’s fresh water in the bilge and does not concern me.
Should I be concerned?

That’s the way they are designed.
You guys are lucky. The first time I filled the tank on my F36 there
was an big explosion. The polyethelene tank expanded upward when it
got full and blew the plywood cover off the screws that held it down.
The vent did not let the air and water out as fast as it was going in.
The cushions flew across the cabin, but fortunately no significant
damage.
Afterward, I noticed that the vent was installed on the side of the
tank about an inch below the top. I installed a small air vent valve
on the top of the tank to let more air out faster when filling the
tank. Later I cut a 4" hole in the plywood cover right over the
baffle area of the tank. Now I can lift the middle cushion and see a
shadow of the water level in the tank as I fill it.
I thought that hose was for overflow. You probably swelled or ballooned the
tank when filling it.

Try to make it a practice not to jam the last gallon of water into
the tanks. As soon as you hear the rising pitch of the in fill as it
begins to top off, thats it. Dry bilges.

Joel:
I don’t think a little fresh water in the bilge will hurt anything. Just
make sure to pump it out as any wood left in contact long enough will rot.
