The mast has the horizontal cracks and the lower two rivets in the mainsail track are loose but it is complete with all fittings and has newish halyards.
I can provide pics and video if anyone is interested.
It is an original Freedom 21 carbon mast and boom. There are visible cracks/crazing in the finish, but I have not had a composite spar professional certify whether they are cosmetic or structural.
I checked the transportation to NY and it’s a bit iffy. So too much trouble for me just to have a spare mast. cracks are normal for these masts, its the gelcoat on the outside and basically cosmetic. What happened to your boat? Why getting rid of the mast?
I sold the boat and the buyer was anxious about the cracks and was planning to re rig her as a junk rig.
I have had the boat for over 5 years, and I don’t believe the cracks are much different than the day I bought her. I would sail with the rig without a second thought.
If you have a pickup truck or a friend with one (sorry, I don’t have one) I have found that one can rent a car transport trailer 22’ long (175.00 a day plus fees and taxes). I believe the mast to be a bout 30’ long and perhaps can hang a bit off the back and with a simple “A frame” at the front end so it can be elevated over the front of the trailer/back of the pickup.
Just a thought. In any case thanks for the inquiry and happy sailing. I think the freedom 21 is a great boat.
Wow, that is just weird (the new buyer idea). As far as transport, that is exactly what I looked into. A 16’ Uhall trailer (abt 24’ overall). Would be about 6’ overhang which still leaves some complications driving through 3 states. If I really needed a new mast, I would go for it I have a tabernacle mast in my boat.
He is a very experienced sailor and is hoping to sail until he is 85. He has a naval architect friend who is helping him with the new rig.
Please let any freedom 21 owners you know about the mast. It will be cut up in a few weeks if it doesn’t find a home. I sold my house and it must be removed.
Looks properly secured but we are talking about 30’ plus pole here. I have a 4runner which is about 15’ long (has a full roof rack) so i could probably brace it in a way that it will not move and take backroads on the way home. This will, however, create a 7’ overhang on both ends so the ride will end with the first trooper seeing me.
