Hello
I am buying an F25 in the UK that I believe was made in this country.
It has a tapered aluminium mast which I believe is original.
I’d be very grateful to hear from anyone have information on the
bending characteristics of this mast?
I will be ordering a new mainsail and aluminium obviously doesn’t
bend like carbon fibre, which is the standard the F25 mast.
Many thanks for any information or leads.

Castaway (UK F-35) has an aluminium mizzen mast, which bends quite
freely. We’ve never stressed it very far, but George, the previous owner, said
that when the running backstay shackle broke withthe large staysail set, it
bent over quite a long way without breaking. However, he did break the
aluminium mainmast, due to a strangely cut sail used for some years: it broke
at the join between the upper and lower sections.
The aluminium mast doesn’t seem much less flexible than the carbon fibre
mainmast, and they both bend to gusts of wind. It is, however, smaller in
diameter and heavier than the mainmast. The sails don’t need to be cut
differently for the different mast materials, as far as I know.

Many thanks for the post Gerald.
If anyone is interested I have some photos of the Freedom 25 that we
are buying at:

It’s got an aluminum mast and a hydraulic lifting keel so I
understand that it is a bit of freak when compared to its American
cousins!
As Gerald says, the mast is very stiff. Two of the photos show it
under tension from the mainsheet with very little bend.
By the way, having read posts elsewhere on the board about spinnaker-
phobia. If anyone has an F25 spinnaker in excellent condition that
they want to sell we may be interested. We are planning to buy a new
main and staysail and buying a new spinnaker too is pushing it.
best to all
Richard
