F25; poor upwind performance. Any tips?

Posted by fgljff (fgljff@…>)

I was in a race last Sunday. The start was a downwind run. We kept up and almost
overtook
some J-80s. But when we rounded the mark and began the upwind leg, we fell
behind. Way
behind.

What could I have done to get better upwind performance? It was light air. Also,
the boat
wouldn’t point very hight.

What is your PHRF or Portsmouth rating? The J80s and most other boats
should be giving you a lot of time. Were you using a staysail? The
right type-and size-can make a great difference. The wrong size, and
type, will not help much-if at all. It has taken 2 years of trial and
error for me to get to the point that my round mast F25 is
competitive with most boats. The J80s and other faster boats still
beat me upwind, sailing faster and pointing higher; however I often
beat them on corrected time. Charlie

My phrf new england is 179. I think I can reapply and get it raised, however,
to around 201.
No, I wasn’t using the staysail. I probably should have. I have two staysails.
One is small and
the other much larger. They have poles (both of which are bent) which are
shackled to the
gunmount sleeve. I guess this is standard. I’m not really sure when to use
which. Also, where
do you place the telltales on your sail? Someone told me that with the wing mast
you can
actually place set of telltales on the aft edges of the mast itself. Then a few
more on the sail.

Use your smaller balanced jib. It will allow you to point higher go
faster and improve weather helm dramatically. Try it, it works for me.

Are your “poles” camber-spars that fit in a sleeve in the sale?

In that case they are supposed to be bent.

Hello,

I’ve got a 120% j shackled down to the deck and it really improves the
pointing power by about 10%. To make for far easier handling I’ve rigged
a nice furling system using the largest Barton furler and swivel top
unit available, approx £60.00. This winter I’m fitting running
back-stays to increase jib luff tension, that will finish the job!

No, they attach at the ‘clews’, and the pole has a snap shackle which
supposdely attaches to
the gunmount sleeve.
