Looking for advice on setting up an anchoring system on my newly
aquired F28CK. Currently there is nothing at all. I believe the former
owner just daysailed on this boat and hung a Delta type anchor on the
pulpit and coiled the line on the foredeck. I would like to install a
spade anchor and all chain rode but am unsure how much chain I can stow
in the chainlocker without adversly affecting the trim. Would be most
interested to hear from fellow F28CK or F33CK owners regarding windlass
selection, size and length of chain, foredeck arrangement etc. Also any
reports regarding the seaworthiness of this design as we plan to move
aboard after the refit for some long distance cruising (Great Lakes to
Rio Dulce)Also looking for dodger ideas/pictures and any other tidbits
of info to turn this into a good little cruiser. Any contact
information on Gary Hoyt…Google came up empty. Cheers, David

I have an F-33 and can’t comment directly on the 28. I posted some pictures of my dodger design in the files section (click files link on the left) of this website.
I installed a Simpson Lawrence 900FF windlass forward of the mast at the bow. I have 130 feet of chain (and some rope) and it stows easily forward of the mast. I don’t know what the space forward of the mast is like on the 28. My F-33 has an anchorsprit so there is plenty of room for that and there are many ways to add a roller or small sprit.
If the 28 is built like the 33 its quite rugged.

After almost losing my fingers once when heaving (by hand) 40 meters
of 8 mm chain and a 35 lbs anchor, I installed a SL 900 electric
windlass on the cathead (the anchor sprit), directly over the
hawsepipe. Spliced to the end of the chain I have 40 meters of 18 mm
three=strand nylon (=elastic) rope.
The hawsepipe leads through the cathead and the deck into the
chainlocker, the free space foreward of the mastbase. There is no
drain overboard, so inspect and clean regularly. For the wiring of
the windlass, I made another hawsepipe of plastic tube, this one
directly under the windlass and glued in place with generous amounts
of sealant. I have no deck switsh (corrosion!) but a wired handheld
control with chain counter connected to a plug just inside the
forehatch and another plug located just inside the cabin top hatch.
The windlass is wired from the starter battery to a heavy two-way
relay that is connected to the windlass, the chaincount-sensor and
the two plugs via a seven-strand control wire. In the main wiring
from the battery to relay (solenoid)there is a 60 amp breaker/switch
that is used as a main switch.
Took me a day to install a few years ago, never gave any trouble.
Anchoring is soooow easy now…
good luck,
Michel

Anybody have any idea about how much weight I can safely add to the bow
in the form of bow sprit, windlass, anchor rode and anchor. I know I
posed this question once before but I never heard from any F28CK owners.
Come on…theres got to be another one besides me on this board. My
boat has no provision for ground tackle of any kind and I am in
desparate need of further info. Like what kind of windlass can I fit in
the small area ahead of the mast. Will all chain rode adversely affect
the boat (I’m thinking 200’ 5/16 H.T.). Bow sprit construction?
Currently I am repairing the mast step in the chain locker as the
original glass over ply one was severely rotted and someone had done a
mickey mouse repair by simply adding another layer of ply over it and
hoping the problem would go away. Aaahhh the joys of sailing…
Also…have noticed on a couple of sites where they claim F28CK’s have
been single handed across the Atlantic and Pacific…can anybody
verify this and what is the consensus as to the offshore ability of
these little cruisers. Thanks.

I’m sure it will be safe to add the weight to the bow area. Most freedoms
are overbuilt in that area. However, 200’ of chain will certainly effect
your trim and performance.
