On my last trip that I just wrote about (and I apologize for the spelling errors
and wrong words I was in a rush) I had another problem with the lub oil
dipstick. It came loose and I must have dumped almost all of the 2.1 quarts of
oil in the engine bilge! And it’s the hardest thing to get to check the
oil level! My head is a serious witness to that with all the lumps from hitting
the ceiling. Anyway has anyone installed a extension tube and a longer dipstick
to bring it forward and prevent any oil leaks from the stick itself?
I
think that the position of the Yanmar dipstick in the F30 verges on the
criminal, but, of course, it is Freedom’s fault, not Yanmar’s. I have an access
port in the aft cabin which makes it possible top reach the dip[stick; I don’t
know if that is standard or installed by a PO. As to head banging, I softened
that issue by installing ¾ round padded dock edging on the piece of the
bulkhead I think you’re hitting. I still hit it, but it hurts a whole lot less.

I was at the Annapolis Boat show yesterday and had a look at the new
Yanmar diesels. I learned something interesting from one of the
mechanics: the rubber gasket on the dipstick is supposed to fit a
heck of tighter than it does on my engine, and quite possibly on yours
as well. You may have lost your oil not because of anything you did
but because the gasket was too loose to keep the dipstick in place.
Alas, the gasket is not replaceable; it is molded onto the dipstick
and so you need to replace the unit.

Thanks I was figuring that was the issue. In fact speaking to Fred Molden,
Volant F35, who’s bring my boat up to Rock Hall as we speak, tied the dipstick
down to the surrounding cables or something in the area and it seems to hold the
dipstick in. He too notice one day that it was not tight at all and there was
oil in the motor bilge. So its another boat buck for a new one…$32 I think.
