F30 CamberSpar

Posted by Bob Weeks (rweeks6508@…>)

Does anyone know the specs of the camber spar
on a F30? Mine was apparently cut to shorten for whatever reason and now
the new jib does not fit properly. I need to length but I have no idea
how much….
Also is this used on other boats, does
anyone still make these?

Bob

First time mast pull on Freedom 35

The harness arrangement in the book is pretty
accurate. Just be
careful when starting the lift as the mast may stick in place,
especially if it hasn’t been removed in a while. A good crane
operator should be able to handle the job properly.

Bob:

My
F30 camber spar is adjustable in length; there is a pop rivet which holds two pieces
together and the rivet could be removed the lengthen the spar some unknown length.

The
camber spar is, I believe, still available from David Bierig Sailmakers in
Pennsylvania.

I had the exact same issue on my F-30 when I replaced my jib (a prior owner had shortened the spar). I had my new jib made at Haarstick. When I took my camberspar apart (by drilling out the stainless rivets) I could not extend it far enough to fit my new sail. I ended up having Dave Berig (he is the inventor of the camberspar) made me a new end to the length I specified. My suggestion would be that you put the camberspar in the new sail and place modest tension on it and see how much longer it needs to be. Then take it apart to determine if you have enough length in your existing stainless end to the spar to make it fit. If so, simply drill new holes, put in new stainless rivets and you are good to go. If not, call Dave. He will make another end piece for about $100 (a steal in my book that anything stainless with multiple welds and a few small pieces didn’t cost 5 times that). Dave can be reached at
814-459-8001. JeffBob Weeks <rweeks6508@…> wrote: Does anyone know the specs of the camber spar on a F30? Dave just made a camber spar for my Freedom 32 (Hoyt). He did a great job. Increased the diameter to 1 1/2 inches to make it a bit more sturdy.

The new spar works great. The price, though, was $400 and not $100. It took about 3 weeks for him to fabricate it. He doesn’t work over the web, so it was a bit like calling into the 1980’s, but the work is excellent.

Even for $400 is a steal!

When I was at Bacon’s in Annapolis last fall, they had a camberspar from a
larger Freedom for about $50. Perhaps it could be shortened.

I believe Jeff only had the end made not the whole spar for $100.
Does Dave have VM at least? I called but it just rang and rang…
Do both ends swiel? My current swiels at the stay end but is
stationary at the mast end.

The mast end must be stationary (vs. the camberspar) in order for the
camberspar to “flip” when the jib tack block’s pull changes sides
when you tack. The stay end swivels when the camberspar flips when
you tack. Herm

That was my experience, too.

The product was great, but from an old model of communication.

It sure works, though.

No voice mail. No fax machine. No email. No website or even an
internet connection of any type. No cell phone. No receptionist
anwering the phone, he answers the plain black telephone that’s
sitting on his desk by himself. Forget paging, text messages, instant
messaging or any fancy-pants stuff like that. You call and he’s
either there and answers or he isn’t and he doesn’t.

When I talked to him about making my new sail I asked “How do you
want to do the payment? Should I pay up front or send you a deposit
or somthing?”

“How about this;” he answered. “I make the sail. I send it to you.
Then you mail me a check.”

I got a hand-written invoice with the (beautiful) new sail. I’m not
even sure if he takes credit cards.

I like this guy.
