I just fell out of my chair researching a
project that requires moving the engine control to the pedestal for a older
non-flexible person. Edson Marine wants $919 for a single handle engine control
that mounts to current pedestal. I am flabbergasted that one could ask
that much for a little housing box and a handle (does not come with control cables).
Non-magnetic metal can not cost that!
Anyway I am back in my seat. Has
anyone come up with less costly solution for the hard to get to engine control
on an F-30??? Or another boat with a similar setup?

Bob,
Try Pyacht.com. They have controls in their engine sections. Dual type (throttle, shift) is $175. You may have to fab a box to fit the Edson pedstal. But for difference of ~$700, you should be able to come up with something.

Bob:
A
more cost-effective approach is to buy a used Edson pedestal on eBay. I
think they run about half of what Edson is quoting you. Incidentally, my
former F30 had the controls on the pedestal.

Bob:
I think this Edson unit will do what you want for about a third the
price.

Bob, I have also been looking for the right way to fix this problem on
my F30 (by the way, Freedom did this ONLY on the 1986 F30 and as Al
mentioned from 1987 on they put it where it belongs). The problem is
it’s a single control for fwd/rev and throttle. Not sure if the unit
Al referenced with 2 controls will work because I haven’t been behind
mine to see if there are really 2 cables. Buying a used pedestal is
certainly an option but thats a lot of extra work. You can always try
and get used to foot shifting. I wish I could tell you I finally did,
but I still have problems when it’s most critical to shift quickly and
precisely. So bottom line is I’m still looking for the way to fix
this. I consider it something that MUST be fixed, even if it’s the
$1000 fix you found. By I’m also holding out for a cheaper “right”
fix (or a deal on something used)…
