F30 leaks in main cabin

Posted by rogerweav (rogerweav@…>)

Hello F30 owners,

I have discovered several leaks in main cabin after a harsh Northern
Michigan winter. First year stored outside, no cover or shrinkwap.

One at top of companionway (Star) along forward edge. Suspect
traveler star side or channel for companionway top (lexon)
Two others at each port in main cabin.

Has anyone experienced these issues? Also I suspect I will have to
pull the overhead to inspect. Does the overhead come out in sections?

Any suggestions would be apprec,

Roger

Roger:

Not uncommon, sadly.

The leak by the companionway is probably from the companionway channel. I don’t think the traveler is in a position to leak where you’re getting water.

As to the port lights, you are probably dealing with dried out gaskets or failed bedding compound. I found that applying Vaseline to the rubber gaskets did wonders to bring them back to life. You might also want to check the caulking on the exterior part of the frame. It is not unreasonable to have to rebed port lights on a 20 year old boat, but I’d try the Vaseline first.

The headliner does come out in sections, but the largest section won’t come out if you have interior grab rails bolted through it(not all boats do). The section of headliner above the galley is what you want to remove to check for companionway leaks. it comes out relatively easily after removing the teak battens.

Roger,

You might also remove the sea hood and check for leaks at the forward end of
the companionway hatch. If you portlight gaskets have not been replaced they
should be. Vasoline will work for awhile but not forever. Replacing the
gaskets is a character-building exercise.

Thank you John,

You mentioned the sea hood, is this the cover over the sliding top of the
companionway. If this is true it appears I would have to loosen the traveler
to move the sea hood forward. Am I correct?

This is the first time I have ask a question and find all these responses very
helpful.

I will try the vasoline on the ports. Where would I find the gasket for these
ports? Are they something special?

Thanks again,
Roger

Thank you Al,

I have removed the teak trim around the companionway and still can not
determine source of the water. The track runs forward past the end of the
companionway and it seems to be coming from that area. Very diff to see
exactly the source.

I will begin with any possible solution which does not include dropping the
entire overhead, removing the traveler, and sea hood. However its a matter of
eliminating the easier solutions first.

Thank you for your comments and suggestions,

Roger

The sea hood comes off very easily and you do not have to move the
traveller. If I can do this anyone can. The opening ports on my 1986 F-30
#16 are Becksons, and you can get the gaskets from them or special order
them from West/BoatUS. Note that the ports are not all the same size, so you
will need measure and order accordingly.

This seems to be a late fall project as I am just going to sail this

Roger:

My understanding, based on the reports of other F30 owners, is that the outside and inside handrails are bolted together. Removing the inside handrails involves destroying them, although it is not clear to me whether or not the outside rails can be salvaged in this situation.

I can tell you what I did for the headliner separation problem. All of the headliner panels, except the large on with the handrails bolted through it, can be unscrewed (after removing the trim) and taken home for work. I pulled the separating vinyl off, scraped off the remains of the foam backing and reglued the vinyl to the backing panels. Since the large center panel could not be removed without destroying the handrails, what I did was this: using a razor, I cut the vinyl from the companionway entrance to the main salon hatch. This permitted me to peel it back of both sides (it stops peeling when you get to the handrails) and clean the foam up reasonably well. I then reglued both sides back up. I made a teak batten strip to cover the razor cut line. Not a perfect job, but a big improvement.

I’m afraid I have little to offer on the leaking companionway hatch issue, as I have the same problem. I have found that a small tarp tied over it when I’m off the boat pretty much eliminates the leak.

Best of luck,

Al

Roger, I have taken the sea hood off about three times in the 20 years that
I have owned my F-30, and I have not had a problem with the screws. In my
experience, I just removed the screws and slid the sea hood back to the
point where it cleared the traveler. The last time I must have done a good
job in sealing the leak "I had because it has been years since I had to take
the sea hood off. The fact that my boat has always been in fresh water might
make a difference.

About three years ago, we replaced the headliner in the main and aft cabins.
The original liner is foam-backed vynl (sp?) and it failed because the glue
used to afix the headliner to the cabin top attacks the foam and eventually
the whole thing goes. In the main cabin, we removed the wood battens and the
trim pieces around the headkiner area and then took down all of the panels.
We then had our canvas guy order new headliner material that has no foam
backing. He made some new panels to replace those that could not be made
smooth and glued the new material directly to the panels. We put the panels
in place and re-installed the battens and trim pieces. This is a two person
job as someone has to hold the panels in place while the trim is being put
back. In doing this be very careful with the brass screws holding the trim
pieces and battens as they are very soft and are prone to stripping out. We
used a good drill driver on a low setting and didn’t lose any of the screws.

This weekend we mounted the jib and Camberspar, and once again cheated
Neptune by not losing the clip overboard. And no hanging chads for us–ever.
Our primary home is the Kona Coast of Hawaii Island. We vote electronically

Ah-ha, I have been looking at the inside hand rails and the first three screws
seem to be inline with the hand rails on deck. I am attempting to find out if
anyone has removed the inside hand rails to find out if they are bolted or
screwed. One F30 owner (Al) has commented that they are bolted and you would
distroy the hand rails inside and out if you attempt to remove them.

My problem with the headliner is its the backer board the vinyl is mounted to
that is crumbing due to the water damage. I will have to find a way to take
the middle section out to replace the mounting board behind the outer
headliner.

Thank you for your comments I will keep you posted as I attempt to remove the
sea hood.

Roger

P.S. You mentioned your boat was always in fresh water yet you said your
primary home is the Kona Coast?

Hello All,
Regarding the removal of the interior overhead hand rails. I do not understand why you would have to destroy them to remove them. Simply drill a small hole into each “bung” (plug) in the handrail, then, using an electric screw driver drill a wood screw into the hole. As the screw bottoms-out on the fastener that hold the rail in place under the bung, the bung will easily back itself from its recess. You will have a bung hole with clean, sharp edges, so when you replace the handrail you only need to use a new bung. No damageto anything.

Thank you Jay, I am of the same opinion. I have removed several pieces of
teak over the years and used the same procedure you described. My question was
is the hand rail bolted or just screwed into the deck hand rail… I know
they seem to match up, at least the last three fasteners are screwed from the
inside on the deck rails. It would seem they are both connected and secured
with the same screws. I just didn’t want to drill out a teak bung unless I
knew it was fastened with a screw or not.

Speaking of bung’s, I have always had some diff with the sizes of the bungs on
my F30. Sometime ago I spoke with Freedom and they explained they are metric
sizes. 4,8,10,& 12 and I ask them to send me a doz of each and he explained
they only have them when they are constructing a boat. So I ask when the have a
supply would they please send me a doz of each size and bill me. Never rec
them. I a looked everywhere for metric size plug cutters and can not find them
here or abroad. I have sanded some down and others I have just drilled a
smaller hole to accommodate the U.S. sizes. Have you noticed this on your
boat?

Anyway wishing you great sailing in SFO. I will be tackling this project this
fall and I will let you know what I find under the bung.

Regards,
Roger

Roger,
I have only changed the bungs on the trim pieces under my deck hatches. They were 1/4 inch, and were easy to find. I haven’t had a need to remove the handrails yet, but I suspect you’ll find a stainless machine screw threaded through the handrail and into a threaded female outside rail. Just a guess, but common sense tells me this. Good luck,
Jay

I don’t know if Plastimo is active in the US, but if they are, they
supply metric sized bungs in bags of 50 or 100. Darned cheap too, at
least here in Europe.

Roger,
On my F44 the inside handrail is throughbolted to the genoa track in
the deck. Every third bolt in the track is longer and holds the
inside handrail. so this must have been a common practice at Freedom.

Thank you Jay, I am of the same opinion. I have removed several
pieces of
teak over the years and used the same procedure you described. My
question was
is the hand rail bolted or just screwed into the deck hand
rail… I know
they seem to match up, at least the last three fasteners are
screwed from the
inside on the deck rails. It would seem they are both connected
and secured
with the same screws. I just didn’t want to drill out a teak bung
unless I
knew it was fastened with a screw or not.

Speaking of bung’s, I have always had some diff with the sizes of
the bungs on
my F30. Sometime ago I spoke with Freedom and they explained they
are metric
sizes. 4,8,10,& 12 and I ask them to send me a doz of each and he
explained
they only have them when they are constructing a boat. So I ask
when the have a
supply would they please send me a doz of each size and bill me.
Never rec
them. I a looked everywhere for metric size plug cutters and can
not find them
here or abroad. I have sanded some down and others I have just
drilled a
smaller hole to accommodate the U.S. sizes. Have you noticed this
on your
boat?

Anyway wishing you great sailing in SFO. I will be tackling this
project this
fall and I will let you know what I find under the bung.

Regards,
Roger

Michel, Thank you for your response.

One question, does the bolt comer from the deck fitting and the nut is on the
inside. I suspect Freedom did it the same way each time. It would just help
when I begin to remove the inside hand rail to know what to expect.

Thank You,
Roger

Roger,

The bolt heads are on the outside in the track on the deck. The nuts
are in the inside handrail. There are very large bungs in the
handrail, over 1/2", I think some 15mm, because they had to fit a
pipe key in the hole to tighten the nuts. I plan on leaving the
bungs out after re-installing the handrail, as I did with bungs in
the inside hatch trim. I like things to be easily removable.
