First, thanks to all who took the time for vote for my son’s entry in
the PTC design competition.
Alex and I finished installing the new Strong Track yesterday and bent
on the new Haarstick sails. We didn’t have time to actually test the
sails for sailing, but it sure was easy to raise the main in the slip
with a 10 kt wind on the beam.
If anyone needs a new main or a backup, my former main is available.
It will not fit the new Strong Track, so it is really useless to me.
But it is in too good shape to throw away without my feeling a pang of
guilt. So, if anyone is interested, make me an offer off-line.

What is it about the Strong Track that requires you to get new sails?

You don’t have to get a new main for the Strong Track system. The Strong system consists of a track and stainless sail hardware. I did not want to pay a sail maker to have the new hardware installed on the older sail. Since I was generally upgrading the boat, I decided to spring for the new sails now instead of a few years down the road.

It will not fit the new Strong Track,
That is a real surprise to me! Seems like it would be worthwhile
buying an extra set of slugs for the old sail. Of course, if you had
to install the back up sail, you’d have to swap the battens and batten
ends from the primary to the back up to fly it.
Believe me, I would love to have had such a back up during one of my
Gulf crossings several years ago when we lost the top third of our
main two days out from Marathon. We spent three days sewing up the
main, but that only held together for six hours.
If you are going to be doing any cruising, keep the backup onboard.
If you are strictly a racer, keep the backup ashore in a storage
locker.

Al,
What was the cost for the track and the cost to have new slugs
installed on your old sail for a F30?

The Strong Track system lists for $25 a foot based on mast height. I got 20 percent off during :Haarstick’s fall sale. Installation was included since I was buyiing new sails.

Riggingonly.com sells the Strong Track system for $19.50 a foot. The mast track length on a F30 is 38.16 ft, so you’re looking at about $745 plus shipping and installation.

email me. In any case, can you tell us if you shopped around for
the new sail, and what the range of prices might be?
