The Freedom 32 manual mentions using a running backstay while flying
the spinnaker but doesn’t say how to rig it. This is the second
season I have had an F32 but have not used the spinnaker so far,
however, I would like to try it this summer. Any info on the
necessity of a backstay and how to rig one would be appreciated.

When I got my Hoyt 32, I asked the same question and the mast designer at TPI said the mast was overbuilt and did not need running backs. I sailed that boat hard and never had a problem. I assume that you are using the standard fractional spinnaker rig.
