F33 - Repower

Posted by paulsebra (paulsebra@…>)

Good day,

I have just wrestled the old 2 cyl Yanmar out of my (new to me) 1981
F33. I could find no data plate, so I am not sure if it is a Yanmar
2GM or 2QM,or something else. I believe the engine is beyond repair,
so I am looking to repower. I will be measuring the space today (the
old engine is out - in 3 big pieces, I might add).

I am looking for advice and guidance … I believe the old engine was
about 20hp, in the tradition of Tim Allen - more is better. I am
looking at two possible replacements - the new Yanmar 3 cyl 30hp and
the 3 cyl Betamarine (27hp).

Does anyone have any advice in this area, other engines that I may
consider - any “easy fit” replacements … ???

Thanks for your help … I am off to get some precise engine mount
dimensions and build some mock-ups to check fit.

Mine has a 3 GM30F,27 hp. If 30 hp will fit well,go for it.

My 33 and all the ones I’ve seen advertised have either the original Yanmar 3GM or the new version 3YM.

Further thoughts- If the new Yanmar has the same layout and dimensions as
the old one,it will be easier to fit. I am pleased with Yanmar,as it is a
real marine engine-plated bolts so no corroded in place fastenings. Not so on
many other engines Ive worked on over the years . Makes service easier.I
dont know about Beta, but Yan parts are easily available, and not outrageous
in price.

I would recommend a Yanmar 3gmf. Yanmar is durable and quiet. From a Surveyors perspective.
