F36 (1986) hand rails

Posted by William A. Cormack (wacormack@…>)

Can anyone tell me how Freedom attached the hand rails (exterior) to the cabin top. Are they screwed in or thru bolted? If thru bolted can they be removed and reinstalled without removing the wood plug?

I would like to remove them and do a full strip & revarnish this fall.

Bill

Bill, on my boat, they were screwed on from below. The only access
is by removing or peeling back the headliner panels. A big job if
only to facilitate varnish. Further more, they were also bedded with
3M 5200 and are difficult to remove without damage. I replace mine
with stainless this past winter and have 4 teak hand rails if you
are interested.

They are through bolted from inside the cabin top. You
can remove them as you have proposed to do. I did the
exact same thing a few tears (I mean years) ago. Be
sure to get your rebedding right. leaks from the screw
holes are miserable and foul up your headliner. Done
that too.
