My 1992 hull #37, Freedom 45 CC, 4JH2-HTE Yanmar, has developed a problem relating to the mixing elbow. After shutdown, sea water lays in the exhaust pipe to the extent that it manages to slosh over the U-type mixing elbow into the exhaust manifold. Small amounts of it make their way into the cylinders and make cold starting difficult. When the injectors are pulled, the water wells up in any cylinders.
Facts:
The U-type Mixing elbow is new, brass and intact.
The problem did not develop after any particular event, but began to occur more and more frequently.
Starting was difficult, but did not result in any damage to piston rods. The boat has to sit overnight for the problem to appear, and even that is not consistent.
The anti-siphon valve is working.
Anyone else have a similar problem or have any knowledge of such a problem??
I have heard of a faulty or just weak raw water impeller letting
water pass into the system (because below waterline), you could try
closing the seacock as a simple test.

I was concerned about that very issue on a F44 so I built a special muffler that fits lower in the boat hull and added a scavenge pump system from that muffler that is able to pump out the washback at engine shutdown.
