F45 deck drains

Posted by bmarserv@… (bmarserv@…)

On my Freedom 45 there are deckdrains in the cockpit as well as on deck. One on
the main deck needs re-bedding. The fitting is barely accesible and there is no
fitting nut showing. The fitting has a piece of fiberglass mat on the inside at
the hull deck joint. Marlon “EL” fitting must have been placed on before the
deck was assembled to the hull since there is not enough room to turn it off.
The hose is off now and the fittings and hose are 1-1/2". I believe the fitting
nut is under the fiberglass.

Does anybody have experience with this and can you impart some wisdom. Bruce.

If your situation is similar, my deck drain consisted of a bronze
flush head 1.5" thruhull (West marine# 113284 page 546)’ with a
brass perforated mesh screen covering the opening. The brass screen
is just caulked in place and is removable exposing the turning lugs
cast into the bore. The mating tail piece is a “Shields” RT. Angle
female Nylon sanitation Hose Fitting (West Marine # 273377 Page 541).

Measure the thruhull and tailpiece to find the assembled hight and
cut the thruhull as necessary. Wrap the threads with teflon tape,
Caulk the deck opening and holding the tail piece in place, turn
down th thruhull using the turning lugs. Takes two people and some
prep, but is not too challanging.

My deck drain failed because it was too shallow and froze during
winter layup. I now caulk a piece of flat plastic over the drains
for the winter.

Thanks for the info. I’m going to look at this closely now. Calling out the
p/n’s was a great help. Bruce
