My Freedom 38 ('89) must be showing its age as the bottom 16 rivets
holding the main sail track to the carbon fiber mast have pulled out
allowing the track bottom (12")to separate from the mast. Anyone
have any experience fixing this problem.

On my 25 the bottom 10 became loose. I just removed
the old rivets, redrilled to the next size rivet and
reriveted. All is fine now. Just be sure to
countersink the rivet heads, otherwise the cars will
stick.

On our 39 Express ketch we used to have rivets pop out periodically.
The factory recommended using aluminum rivets like the stock ones to
avoid dissimilar metal corrosion. Part of my regular maintenance
routine was going up the masts with a can of Sail Kote and a rivet
gun. I’d replace any popped rivets and spray the track. I would not
recommend drilling the holes any larger unless the replacement
rivets fail to hold. You might consider making a small mark with a
permanent marker next to replaced rivets. You can then periodically
inspect the higher ones with a pair of binoculars. If you’re up
close you can tell the newer ones because of their condition.
For climbing the mast I used a mountaineering harness and a pair of
ascenders. While aloft I would also inspect the radar by removing
the cover and making sure no moisture was accumulating inside the
unit. Although not related to the topic I think it’s a good idea to
leave radar units in standby 24/7. There is a heating element in
there that helps keep things dry.
Man I miss owning a Freedom. If anyone is giving one away drop me a
line. Donation of any size from 21-45 accepted.
I hope to be moving back to the Bay Area or up to Puget Sound within
the next year or two so I’m sure we’ll have another boat by then.

Dave,
I’ve got a better idea. Why don’t you move to San Diego and we can be partners in your previous Freedom 39. I’ve made some real nice improvements and would love a partner like you. That reason enough to move south isn’t it. The weather isn’t bad (year around) either.

Dave,
Thanks for the advice. Have bought the rivet gun and will do the repairs. Also, someone mentioned to squeeze some 5200 super adhesive under the track to be extra sure it never separates from the mast.
