Finish for Ash " Ceiling" in Mull era Freedom''s

Posted by lioneldmp7 (doug.payne@…>)

I have repaired the deck leaks on my 87 Freedom 28 caused by two
months of torrentialrains here in Arizona. In the V berth cabin, it
was the rear foot of the bow pulpit, where the bow light wires enter
the cabin, and in the quarter berth area it was the forward foot of
the stern pulpit where the stainles steel bolt screwed from below up
into a threaded plate on the base of the pulpit foot had striped out
allowing the seal on the toe rail to leak.

I would appreciate any advise on refinishing the ash boards. I have
some black stains and discoloration and some areas where the boards
have pulled away from the thin plywood backing that is attached to
the hull. I can get those glued back in position easily. Are these
boards stained and varnished, natural and varnished, stained and
oiled??? I can’t tell from looking at the finish.

I am considering bleach for the stains and sanding the boards to get
rid of the finish, getting back to raw wood, then refinish. Any
advise would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance

Lionel,

I have had success by sanding clean and bleaching, sometimes a srong peroxide bleach is also usefull. The easiest finnish I have found, and I have tried most on the market is called Wipe On Poly by Minwax, it penetrates leaves no steaks, rag it on!

The wipe on Polly by Minwax or even by Homer Formby is great. The orignal finish is Watco Danish Finishing Oil. That is what the factory put on your boat originally. I used it on a 28 I had and the results were great. andre laviolette <andrelaviolette@…> wrote:

Chuck, do you think the Watco was “natural”

A week or so ago I inquired about the finish for the ash strips lining
the hulls in Mull era Freedoms. I learned from the group it was Watco
Danish Finishing Oil that was applied by the factory. Doing a little
research on this product I find it comes in “natural” and “golden
oak”. Does anyone know which was used?

I have used Watco Danish Oil in the past. It was applied on teak and mahogany however. In time, this finish, much to my dismay, turned very dark!
For a satin finish I now use Minwax Wipe On Poly. Finish looks like Danish furniture.

On My F-33 interior I used the minwax and it came out very nice and was easy to use. However I had to develop a mix of their stain colors with the clear to match what was there and cover over some old stains (bleached first).

Thanks. I did varnish the wood near the sink and fridge,as it takes a beating. I used satin interior marine varnish, and it looks well, and stands up to scuffing, spills, and water
