First time mast pull on Freedom 35

Posted by M & V Jarvis (5emerson@…>)

I am going to be hauling my Freedom 35 (#70, 1997) a little
early this year, and plan to pull the mast for the first time to renew 10 year
old halyards and do some mast head maintenance. I am not sure if my yard
hands have pulled a Freedom spar before, but I have not, so I would like to tap
the experience of this august group and request any advice, suggestions and
help that you can offer. I have the hand book and have studied the
drawings, but theory only goes so far! Where are the hidden problems?
Thanks in advance.

I have a Freedom 32 that I have “planted” the mast twice and pulled
once.

I found that when pulling be sure the strap is no higher than
necessary otherwise when you catch the base to lay it down the lever
effect as it is lowered to the horizontal can be intense. A couple
strong men can come in very handy.

When re-installing the base can chip if not lowered centered. This
sounds like a “well duh” but a good crane operator can lower and stop
without inducing a bounce. If you have side bolts remember to line
them up. The crane operator can also help with wedge installation.

The harness arrangement in the book is pretty accurate. Just be
careful when starting the lift as the mast may stick in place,
especially if it hasn’t been removed in a while. A good crane
operator should be able to handle the job properly.
Good Luck
