Foggy Windows on 1988 F30

Has anyone repaired the foggy plexiglass windows on the 1988 era F30?
I think it would be a good winter project. If you have any insight as
to glass, or optical grade acyrlic.

Mark,
this past summer I used the starbrite plexiglass polish on Bright
Star’s portholes (1980, very yellow) with pretty decent results. It’s
a two-step process, with a coarse first step to get rid of the major
scratches and yellowing and a second, finer polish to get rid of some
of the minor scratches. I don’t usually buy stuff that seems that
gimmicky, but I was pretty impressed with how it worked on the
portholes. The hatches, however, have deeper scratches than that and
I’m going to have them re-glazed by select plastics this winter.

I had Select Plastics do four Lewmar hatches for me. They came out great with still no leaks. I will eventually do my opening ports that are a bit crazed.lance_ryley <lance_ryley@…> wrote: Mark, this past summer I used the starbrite plexiglass polish on Bright Star’s portholes (1980, very yellow) with pretty decent results. I am working on that one this winter, especially the fixed ports. Very
hazy and dark; and here in Maine, dark we do not need. It’s a bear as
the fixed ports are very securely bedded in 3M 5200 (according to Bob
at TP) Have gotten one out, three to go. As to the glazing I have
the impression that lexan is less likely to actually break than acylic
tho’ maybe not less likely to scratch (?) Pompanette Ltd is Bomar and
they will replace the glazing for me if I ever get them out, which is
probably good as the frames don’t want to come off the glazing either.
Have been using one of the debonding agents (forget its name) and I
plan to try all available. I would love to do tempered glass but I am
not sure that is a choice.
Sure could use help and advice.

Our fixed ports on F30#12 need reglazing, also. Have removed one that was leaking, tested the glazing…which did not leak…and rebeded with the silicone recommended by Beckson for installing their ports. No leaks on our very stormy, wet trip from Connecticut to Florida last month. No leaks on the properly installed new replacement Beckson ports (2 of 4 leaking before replacement). When I can remove all fixed ports, who can reglaze them, at what cost, and what timing? Note that there is a scratch-resistant version of both “Lucite”, and
“Plexiglass”, but you must ask for it. Herm

Fargo,
Select Plastics (http://www.selectplastics.com/) in CT did my
forward hatch and they do excellent work. I’m going to have them do
the main hatch as well. Their turnaround is decent. My buddy Andrew
had all of his ports redone by them. Generally they do the glass and
new seals for your hatch.
