forgot the Boat Show report

Posted by Dave_Benjamin (dave_benjamin@…>)

Nothing too earth shattering at the Miami Show. The guy with the Winch
Buddy was there and I checked out his modified drill setup. It’s a bit
pricy for what it is but offers a turnkey solution. If you had the
time to do a bit of research and have a machine shop nearby it could
be duplicated pretty reasonably.

I saw an Italian feathering prop that looked good. It’s called J-Prop.
Very easy to adjust with boat in water and a good looking design. I’d
give it a serious look if you’re in the market.

Only production boat that impressed me was the Tartan 3400. It offers
a lot of bang for the buck relative to the competition at similar
price point and boat size. Thought the Shannon 43 was overrated. Found
some very sloppy joinery in a few spots, drawers for the most part,
and an odd material choice backing the inside of a few locker doors.
Ran into the broker we used to buy Entropy. We both lamented the
absence of Freedom. He’s in the multihull business now.

Kathy and I are giving some thought to putting a boat into charter to
facilitate some sailing vacations. Of course none of the charter boats
are anything to get excited about. It would also “force” us to take
more vacations. If anyone has any experience with charter boat
ownership please email me directly. I don’t want to get something
totally unrelated to Freedom going here.

If you already have a drill, you can get “The Cranker” for $26
(www.thecranker.com).

If you’re looking for an inexpensive drill to do the job, check out the
Ryobi 18v angle drill for around $70.00 at Home Depot.

As I understand it, the Winch Buddy is a Milwaukee 18v angle drill which can be bought online for about $325 plus the special bit, which can be bought at a number of sources. Perhaps the neoprene cover is included with the the Winch Buddy is so that you don’t see that you’re paying three times as much for a Milwaukee drill.

Lance, have you actually used the Ryobi drill? The price difference makes me wonder whether it can generate the necessary torque.

The problem with drills other than Milwaukee,is that ,frequently the gears
are not up to the torque load, and break after a short time. I had that
problem with a DeWalt, and I have heard similar stories about others. My
Milwaukee is now 3 yrs old,and is as new. It would have been cheaper to have
gotten the Milwaukee first. BTW,the bit that fits the winch is 17 mm
diam, and 17mm square stock fits perfectly.

I bought the winchbit which is a bit nicer
as it is not just a square bit but actually star shaped like a normal winch
handle. When I bought it it was around $30. The website is: http://www.winchbit.com/

I paid less than $300 for the 18v Milwaukee right angle drill. Look online.

I bought a new 18volt Milwaukee from Lowe’s and a Winch Bit. Under $300.00 for both. I couldn’t find any drill that had the torque spec’s of the Milwaukee, it’s a really strong unit! The guy at the show said that most drills won’t handle running in
reverse under heavy loads. Supposedly he reinforces the the chuck. Of
course that isn’t even a factor unless you have a 2 speed winch. Like
I said before I think you could put something together on your own for
a lot less.

The “guy at the boat show” might want to check with Milwalkee regarding the “fragility” of running the 18volt in reverse PWMDave_Benjamin <dave_benjamin@…> wrote: The guy at the show said that most drills won’t handle running inreverse under heavy loads.
