Freedom 21 Genoa % & Instruments ??

Posted by charlesarasim (crarasim@…>)

Does anyone know the % of the optional Genoa for the 21? Also does
anyone know what kind of instruments came on the 21 from Freedom? I
have a set (depth & speed) of Navico’s and would like to get them
working. Both the sending units leaked when I first put her in the
water and I’ve taken them out and plugged the TO’s for now. Would it
be wiser to just buy new? I was looking at a new set of Raymarine
ST40 units but I don’t think thre is enough room for them. Has
anyone got units/models currently available that would fit into my
existing cutouts (I think they are 3in dia (haven’t measured them
yet))?
I just finsihed the Fall Series with the Rio Grande Sailing Club
(RGSC) at Elephant Butte Lake, New Mexico. It was my first time
racing the new boat and I was able to win the Portsmith Championship
by 1/2 a point. She has become the talk of the club as the other
boats in my fleet are all larger. I was able to physically beat 2
Catalina 25’s and a Hunter 26 w/b. They are amazed at how I can fly
a spinakker single handed and how quickly the boat accelerates in the
puffs.

Hi Charlie;
I have an F-25. It came with a Raymarine ST40 Speed & Depth Bidata
unit. The required hole thru’ the hull needs to be 2" thru’ the
outer skin and 2 3/8" thru’ the core on the inside. The Transducer
fits in the housing and it’s about 1 3/4" dia. They both fit just
aft of the mast under my V berth. I don’t know what the inside of
the F-21 is like, it should be very much the same.
You evidently know how to sail a Freedom. I could ise some
lessons. It’s a great boat and I hope that next season will be a
great one. I can’t help with the sails as it’s my season.
Regards

Harv, Invicta too, F-25

Hi Harv;
My thru hulls for the depth transducer and the speed paddle wheel are the same as yours, just behind the mast step and just in front of the keel. My problem is the area on the deck house is limited…the units I have now are both round (maybe 3 1/2") and are on the port side, with my compass on the starboard side by itself. I’ve had the boat down at the lake (3hr drive) and she is now back home where I can start measuring things. I was hoping I might just be able to repair these units, the depth sounder worked but the sending unit for the speedo was not wired up. I have a feeling all I need are new sending units for both. I bought the boat out of Escanaba, MI, at the North end of Green Bay, I think water got into the senders and froze causing them to leak.
This is my 5th boat and I have been racing down here since 1989. I bought a Freedom 25 hull #12 in 1996 with the rotating wing mast and won a 2nd place B fleet finish that first season with her. Some friends with a J/24 asked me to start crewing for them and I sold the boat after she sat for 2 years, then I got married and went back to school for 2 years. So I was boatless for about 7 years total…last summer I took my wife out with my J/24 friends and she loved it, but due to her having medical problems sailing on a regular basis for her is out. So after the experience I had with the 25 I decided to start looking for a 21 and picked this boat up on April 15th 2003. I’m originally from southern MI and we had planned a dive back to see my Aunt’s and Uncle’s, so we took a 800mi detour to pick up the 21. It was really something to drive over Mackinaw bridge in mid-April. With the hugh roach and full battens in the main this design works well for our puffy lake winds, the other big advantage is that I don’t need a crew. It is very hard to get and keep a trained crew for even one four month series of races down here.
I’ve even flown the spinnakar in heavy winds, had her doing 9kts on a run.
The best advice I can give you is to let the main out as far as you can, get you course set and then start triming in the main, without touching the helm you will see the boat start to lift, also you want to keep the traveler to windward and the vang loose so in light air the the main can be baggy and catch every puff. In heaver air set the traveler right under the boom and put on tons of vang, cunningham, and outhaul to flatten the main as much as you can. Don’t trim in the main too much as the hull/keel seems to not work as well with more than about 12* of heel.

Charlie. Are you familiar with Matt Dwyer’s F 21 website. The
following web page is his section on F 21 sail dimensions. Looks to
me like the genoa % of the “J” measurement is approximately 200%. The
reason for the large % is the fact that The F 21 is basically a cat
boat, and the “J” measurement is only 5.25 feet. >>>>>

Thanks Charlie
200% is about what I had figured…I thought it was a little
large but as you say it is a Cat Rig.
Do you have any advice on new sails…I’m conversing with
Harstick and North.
Steve Harstick told me they are now using a loose footed main, he
said it actually adds sail area???
Looks like we have a few Charlie’s with Freedoms…

Dec. 17 Hi Charlie. You can’t go wrong with either Haarstick or
North. The owners who have Haarstick swear by them. I am partial to
North for two reasons: 1) I mostly race, and they’ve made the fastest
sails since the '60s to this day; 2) My long time friend, Al Gooch,
runs the North loft in New Orleans, which is just a few hours from my
home. I’ve bought a genoa and a blade from him, and they work great
on my small Harken furler. For the main, loose footed is the way to
go. My main was made by Doyle. Charlie L.

see.
