Freedom 21 mast

Posted by Daddy (ymgalvez1969@…>)

I am getting my Dad’s Freedom 21, 1983. The mast needs some
repairs. Who can fix a carbon fiber mast, or should I get it
replaced? It was previously broken near the base, top of the cabin.

Carbon masts can be repaired using a
long taper , proper materials and correct fiber orientation.

The tabernacle mast is hinged at the deck level , the main mast has a
metal sleve that slides over an uluminum hinge indersed into the stub
that goes to the buttom of the hull. The metal sleve is 12 - 18 inches.

You should be able to have an insert made to connect the two but you
probably have to make sure that it tapers a bit inward at the top so
the mast is not working against a well defined edge causing another braek.

I am sure you can build it up with glass as well - kind of like you
average nightcrawler with few problems.

Good luck.

Info for possible repair

Look at Factory Info - F-21 Notes:

http://www.dwyergreen.com `Convert keel stepped to hinged
mast’

Page 4 (last page) show a sleeve insert in the bottom portion of the
mast (5" OD x ¼ wall,which will have a 4 ½" ID). For the
top section use a similar sleeve. Then use a 4 ½" Plug (without
hinge) 3/8" thick that goes into top & bottom sleeves. Plug may have
to be machined. Discussion on pages above talks to epoxy and
remember to insert pin to maintain alignment.

Good Luck,
Nick
