Freedom 25 - Doyle UPS sail

Posted by ABC (oldbrochan@…>)

Has any F25 owner experience with a UPS sail and if so
can they share their experiences/comments?

What are the pros and cons of this type of sail?

Does the UPS interfere with setting the spinnaker?

Grateful for any assistance/comments.

Dave

Dave. I have a UPS for my F21. I have just taken delivery of a F25,
and intend to buy a UPS for it. If you are more of a cruiser than a
serious racer, it might be the only headsail that you will ever use,
since it will fly opposite the main dead downwind without a pole. As
great as the gunmount spinnaker is, it’s nice to remove all of the
lines, and the pole, from the boat, and use the UPS instead of the
spinnaker. All of the positive things that Doyle says on its website
about the UPS are true. I have my F21’s UPS on a Harken staysail
furler, so I can easily furl it when going upwind, or on a very
close reach, when the wind picks up over 12 knots. Under 12 knots
you can use it on all points of sail. Over 12 knots you can use it
dead downwind, and on broad/beam reaches. If you are primarily a
racer, you would probably prefer your traditional-cut jib/staysail
for going upwind. As to interference with the gunmount spinnaker
operation, you can tack the UPS (or your jib) to the eye on top of
the spinnaker tube when not using the spinnaker; then move the
furled UPS’ (or jib’s) drum to a length of shock cord attached to
the stanchion base immediately behind the mast when using the
spinnaker (my furler drum has a snap shackle on the bottom); or
simply drop the furled UPS/jib to the deck, and into the front hatch
(very easy, since it’s furled. I use fast pins to attach the sail to
the furler’s upper swivel and drum, leaving the upper swivel
attached to the halyard at all times.) As I said, if you’re
primarily a cruiser, you will probably use the UPS instead of the
spinnaker. You should have two forward halyards (Jib/staysail, and
spinnaker). Hope this helps. Charley PS Do you have a Boom Brake
on your F25? With the large main and long boom, that’ll be my first
new piece of equipment for my F25. The UPS will probably be my
second purchase.
