freedom 25 in light air

Posted by rfranck1936 (pfranck@…>)

long island sound often has breezes of 5 knots and under. how well does a 25
with small jib
perform in these conditions ( compared, for example to a 25 foot sloop with a
big jib)?

thanks for your experience

Hello. I have owned/sailed/raced 2 F21s and now a F25. I bought
staysails for all 3 boats. The 100% sails did little to enhance
performance. The 200% sails greatly enhance speed and performance in
winds from 1 to 12 knots. For my F25 I bought a new roller furling
Catalina 22 jib, which has a hoist of 26’,and an LP of 12.4’,from
mastheadsailinggear.com {used sails section, even though this is a
new sail). It fits perfectly tacked to the eye atop the gunmount tube.
Cost of the sail with an internal hitech luff line or wire (installed
by masthead), furling cover, telltales, etc. was apx $650. I use it
with a Harken staysail furler. From Masthead, I also bought a
used/like new Melges 24 jib, which has a longer hoist, and shorter LP
of apx 9’. It tacks to the padeye on the deck, and also works very
nicely if you are not using the spinnaker. Also has the internal
hitech line. These used sails, in good to like new condition, sell
from $250-500$, plus the cost of installing the luff line/wire (I had
them take a few inches off of the top of this sail, so it would fit
between the furler drum and top swivel). I also bought a new Doyle
nylon UPS sail that tacks to the gunmount top, and can be used as a
close reaching to dead downwind spinnaker, without a pole. See on
Doyle sails website. Also has an internal hitech luff line, and can
be used on the furler. Call me if you want to discuss my experience
in racing/sailing my F25. 251-928-8967. Charlie

You might like to try something along the line of the “G 10 Sail plan”
where the sail is seperated from the mast.

I did so on my F21 and found the light air performance improved. I
borrowed some class jibs 100/150 a couple years ago and as far as I
recall this is better - one well trimmed sail seem better to me. There
will be few times when the extra sail help.

charlie, thanks for the detailed jib discussion.

do you have experience servicing/rebuilding the yanmar diesel?

can the color of the smoke predict the $$$ for repair?
