Freedom 28 (Mull) Mainsheet rigging

Posted by Herman Schiller (hschiller2@…>)

My Freedom cat-sloop, and perhaps, others Freedoms of 1987 vintage,
has a multi-part mainsheet that has three 3" Harken Single Blocks hung
on two fittings on the bottom of the boom. Two of these blocks are
shackled to a single under-boom fitting. No matter what rearrangement
of these two blocks I tried, they would interfere with each other
resulting in non-fair sheet leads, and the mainsheet rubbing on the
other block.
I solved this problem by using a 3/8"x 1" aluminum alloy bar about 9-
1/2" long, into which I drilled three holes, two that lined up with
the under-boom fittings, and a third centered on the length of the bar
to accomodate a 1/4" bow shackle for separately shackling one of the
three mainsheet blocks. The two holes near the end were 5/16" diameter
to accept 5/16" bow shackles, which are used to attach the aluminum
alloy bar to the under-boom fittings and also provide attachment
points for the remaining two blocks. The three minsheet blocks now
have four inches between attachment points and no longer interfere
with each other. Herm (SV “Impulse”)

The three blocks should be attached to
three separate fittings under the boom. There should be no interference with
this arrangements. If you need a picture, I could supply one as I have made pictures
of all the running rigging so I get it right when I commission/decommission the
boat for transport.

Doug, I absolutely agree that the three blocks should be attached to
three separate fittings. However, my boat has only two fittings
attached to the underside of the boom. Moreover, the drawings
supplied by Freedom of the mainsheet rigging shows two single blocks
shackled to the forward underboom fitting and one to the rearward
fitting. I didn’t like the resultant interference of blocks and non-
fair leads of the sheet, and proceeded to create the third
attachment point. Everything works fine now. If your picture is of a
Mull-design Freedom 28, I’d love to see it. Thanks,
Herm

It won’t show the underside of the boom. It that is helpful, I can get

Herman and all,
Somewhere I’ve a close-up of the blocks, but this should help:
http://www.sailonset.com/DCP_2133x600.jpg.

Jim Tomlin, who owns the last Mull 28 built, had an extra bail for the
under-boom track which he was kind enough to give me. I drilled out the
rivets on the two original bails, spaced the new one, and then drilled and
tapped threads for large set screws. (Couldn’t find a rivet gun for the
large OEM rivets.)

It did relieve the battle between those two foreward blocks. This was the
arrangement shown in all the drawings I had, but didn’t work well as we’ve
all discovered. The 30s I believe have a double block on the forward bail?

Doug,
I’ve concluded that the ‘87 version of
the mainsheet rigging is probably a consequence
of the beancounters’ pressure on the technical
side of the Freedom organization. There is no
sign of an additional bale, that is now missing
from the boom, and this being corroborated by the
(factory) drawings and the Freedom brochure I
have, plus the fact that my fix solved the
problem, I don’t think I want to ask you to
E-Mail the picture. I’m theorizing that someone
added a third bale to the underside of your boom
to improve the mainsheet rigging. Thanks again for your input.

I agree that the original system was prone to jamming. When I installed a rigid boom vang and removed the rope vang, I suddenly had a spare boom fitting and rerigged the mainsheet accordingly. I believe the Mull 30/32s all had Isomat booms. It is reasonably easy to remove the end cap and slide on a new fitting andf secure it with a few pop rivets.
