New Freedom 30 owner out in the PNW. I’m having an issue with my jib halyard, it doesn’t really want to go up or come down without more effort than it should take. I haven’t had a chance to get anyone aloft to inspect just yet, but am struggling to understand how this thing is constructed and where the halyards should be lying when working correctly. The drawing from the manual doesn’t really look like what I am seeing here, but could just be my perspective from below, any advice would be welcome. Cheers Bryan
That looks correct. The spinnaker halyard is above and can go to either side. Jib halyard is center lower, and the topping lift is dead ended at one side, adjusted from below at the clew.
I’ve seen some boats set up with the spinnaker halyard as a topping lift, but that is not optimal.
If you look close, you can see the halyard has jumped your sheave block. My red scribbles show the sheave’s placement… note how your halyard is sitting to the side if it. Going up on the bosuns chair and just simply re aligning it should fix the problem. Your halyard might be too thick for the sheave’s contour… consider that if the problem happens again
I should also say that your forestay might be sitting too far to port which is causing the halyard to roll off the sheave. You wont really know until you get a better look.
Thanks, I noticed it was riding up on the guide just didn’t know which side it was supposed to be on. I just delivered her home last Saturday so I will be getting a closer look at it tomorrow. Thanks for the help.
agree, that halyard looks pretty beefy. I think line dims are in the same manual you got the box drawing from assuming the manual is complete. Easy to check. Some of us have copies if needed. Also the stbd jaw toggle connecting the jackline cable to the tang looks a little wonky. Maybe it’s the perspective??
