As a recent Freedom 30 owner, I am in need of some guidance for optimizing sail
trim for
all points of sail but especially for improving upwind performance. If anyone
has any tips
and tricks they would share on what’s worked for you, I would be very
appreciative. I am
also interested in locating any additional published resources on the subject if
available.
I recently looked at some old pictures of the F30s racing at the
Bitter End Yacht Club–these were celebrity races (one of the boats
being skippered by Gary Mull). With the boats close hauled, the jibs
were as close to the center line as possible, while the main looked
to be at least as far out as the end of the traveller.

The 1983 Freedom 32 I sail now is a very similiar boat to the
30’s I’ve seen in the BVI. To see what is going on with the jib
I have to go forward by the mast. Going upwind it has a lot of
twist/bow. To get the upper part trimmed nicely the lower has to be
in towards the center. The jib then bellows out and the upper
shape is okay. To much trouble to try extra lines…
My understanding is that cat boat sailors give the advise of
falling off, filling the sails, building speed, and heading up
a little. If the speed falls off repeat. I’m constantly playing
the gusts and don’t sail a straight line upwind. Also Hoyt in
docs said not to pull the main down to the center of the boat.
