Freedom 30

Posted by Bob Weeks (rweeks6508@…>)

Happy to say I am in the final stages of purchasing a F30. The only
thing that concerns my is having to unstep the mast and prepare it and
the boat for shipping by truck. Have anyone gone through this
recently and can you give me what pointers you may have?

Bob:

A little humor - dont’s stand near the mast step when they pull the mast lest you want to get soaked by the residual water accumulated in the base of the mast. Frtunately when I prepared my F36 for shipping from Harbor Springs MI to Portsmouth RI I was witness to the yard worker when he got dumped on by the water in the base of the mast when they pulled the mast.

Bob,

No big thing. I did all the prep: Removed boom, lashed down the
Haylards, ect. The only hold up was the collar at the deck.
They used some very good sealant (5200 maybe) Used a stiff putty knife
to break it loose. After remove the retailing bolt at base of mast, it
was all up to the crane for heavy lifting. I did pad the mast very
well for the truck ride. Restepping the mast was even easier.
Special note: while the mast is down see ideas about containing the
electrical cables and VHF ant wires in the mast. Or, you will live
with them banging around for ever. Not great for a good nights sleep.
Best of luck

On pulling the mast on the Freedom 30,
while it is out of the boat, check that what ever drainage system you have to
allow rainwater that gets down the mast to drain to the bilge is clear. They
can become obstructed and you won’t drain properly, that leads to water
across the floor of the V berth cabin and possible damage to the v berth cabin
bulkhead from water trying to get to the bilge over time. Some of these boats
have a drain in the mast step that you should be sure is not obstructed.

My Mull
28 has gone on the road twice and has traveled half way across the country. I
have a very large heavy duty trailer, custom fit to the boat, but it is towed
by a professional trucker. Some things to think about are to pad every thing
very carefully, remove as much gear as possible topsides. Pad interior loose
items as much as possible. Drain all the tanks you can, holding, water, fuel if
possible. Inspect the boat personally on both end for damage. I built a simple
wood brace for the mast for the stern pulpit and lashed and padded it to the
bow pulpit, it came through just fine. Mark all the mast wiring if it isn’t
obvious how it reconnects. Bag and stow all the mast wedges, the mast collar,
etc as those are very hard to replace. Good luck. Trucking rates are way up due
to diesel fuel prices compared to recent years.

Does anyone know how the F30’s rudder was constructed? Is it simular
to the F35 and all the emails referencing water in the rudder?
